Google Releases Desktop Search

Google has been working on this for a little while but nonetheless it’s a good thing, http://desktop.google.com/

This tool allows you to:

  • Find your email, files, web history and chats instantly
  • View web pages you’ve seen, even when you’re not online
  • Search as easily as you do on Google

Reuters says:

The Google Desktop offering takes direct aim at Microsoft Corp., which bought a desktop search business in July, as well as current and expected desktop product releases from other companies such as Apple Computer Inc., Ask Jeeves Inc. and Time Warner Inc.’s AOL.

Marissa Mayer, Google’s director of consumer Web products says:

Our goal is to have it behave like a photographic memory for your computer.

The bad news is the current system requirements:

Requires Windows XP or Windows 2000 SP 3+

Which means you currently get to use Google Desktop to find these kinds of files:

  • Outlook / Outlook Express
  • AOL Instant Messenger
  • Internet Explorer
  • Text
  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint

Brian Tiemann commented at Dean’s World that Spotlight is on the way for Mac users. If it can be done on OSX then it can be done in Linux, if it hasn’t already (all it takes is time).

Google is also requesting feedback on this product so if you use it please contribute to the cause and point out what you like and didn’t like about it.

Google Desktop - A new technology from Google; potential privacy issue for you


One problem is that it centralizes de information and made search really easy and fast. Problems can arise if anybody can have a physical access to your computer station.
