Interview with Peccaui of The New Gamer (Part 2)

Interview with Peccaui of The New Gamer (Part 1) discussed the Nintendo Gamecube and the decision to purchase one as well as some of the software and hardware available for the Gamecube. Part 2 will continue the discussion with Peccaui of The New Gamer about the Nintendo Gamecube.

Chris: So what good games are out there that 3 year old could pick up on fairly easily that my wife and I would also enjoy?

Peccaui: I’d suggest Animal Crossing - I’m not sure you’d dig it, but I think your wife and daughter might. Zelda: Wind Waker is fantastic too.

Chris: Zelda is a tad advance at this point I would think.

So what’s the deal with the network adapter (any good network games out there?) and GameBoy adapter?

Peccaui: Nope - there are two network games and they’re both Phantasy Star Online. The Gameboy link-up adapter is like $5 or so and plugs into the controller slots. You can use it for games like Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles to control your characters, you can upload new games/transfer data to your GameBoy from your Gamecube (in Animal Crossing you can find old NES games and upload them to your Nintendo Gameboy Advance).

Chris: I saw something else for the Gameboy to interface with the Gamecube. It was like $50 though.

Peccaui: The Gameboy Player?

Attaches to the bottom of your Nintendo Gamecube?

The Gameboy Player just allows you to playing Gameboy games through your Nintendo Gamecube. I like it, but I got it free.

Chris: Nice… I want a free one.

Peccaui: Hah… they used to give them away with the purchase of a Gamecube before the $99.95 price drop.

Chris: Looks like I missed the boat on that one. So can you play any Gameboy games through the Gameboy Player?

Peccaui: Yup!

Chris: Even the original Gameboy games?

Peccaui: I’m pretty positive. The Gameboy Advance is back-compatible with Gameboy and Gameboy Color games.

100% positive.

Chris: Awesome! I need to dig up those old games from the original Gameboy I got when it first came out.

Peccaui: Yah, it’s a good deal. I play my Gameboy Player more than my Gameboy Advance.

Chris: Wow. That says a lot about the Gameboy Player and the Gameboy Advance all in one sentence.

Peccaui: It says more about my gaming habits than the Gameboy Player actually :-P I like the Gameboy games, but don’t often actually play games away from my television set.

Chris: Small screen annoy you? How do the graphics of those Gameboy games look on a TV?

Peccaui: They don’t look as sharp as on the Gameboy but it’s not bad. The ability to play with my Wavebird on the TV makes up for it. The small screen doesn’t annoy me really, but I have an old Gameboy Advance - not one of the new-fangled SPs so there’s no backlight. That does kinda suck.

Chris: Yes it does. One of my co-workers had an old-style Gameboy Advance while we were out in the desert. Lighting was always a problem and getting lights for the old school Gameboy Advance were always a problem out there. He went through a few light kits.

Peccaui: Yah. But unitdaisy has an SP so sometimes I just nab hers.

Chris: My niece has an SP so I imagine the
Gameboy Player will come in handy when the niece is around.

So I was just in the BX and saw that the Gamecube has a modem adapter. Is there an ethernet adapter for it as well or not?

Peccaui: Yup, there’s a Gamecube Broadband Adapter. Hard to find, as far as I know though. There’s a cult following behind it for The Warp Pipe Project, which is basically like Xbox Connect for the Nintendo Gamecube.

Chris: So online gaming on the Nintendo Gamecube is setup similarly to Xbox online gaming?

Peccaui: Not nearly as zealous. The Warp Pipe Project hasn’t exited beta, plus there aren’t That many LAN games available yet.

Chris: But it’s pay to play the official [Nintendo] stuff?

Peccaui: Actually, I think Phantasy Star Online is free but I’m not positive.

Part three of this interview with Peccaui of The New Gamer will be released tomorrow morning and will discuss the current state of gaming and where the gaming industry should be going.
