Revelation - Mozilla smokes IE on OS X

In doing some experimenting this morning, I made an important discovery - Mozilla should be the browser of choice for Mac users. As a lifelong Windows guy and advocate of IE as the only real choice on Windows, this is a serious wake-up call.

Mozilla renders images faster and more accurately on OS X. Mozilla renders Flash the way it's meant to be rendered, not the IE way, which is to buffer the entire file before playing it back. Pages load more quickly using Mozilla on my iBook. Bottom line - on the Mac, I'm a Mozilla convert.

If you want to easily listen to the shows stream, do not pass GO, do not collect your $200, just get to Mozilla.org and download the latest OS X build. You'll thank me later, I promise.

Questions & Answers -
Question - Val from the internet. Would like to know where to go to get a good free website hit counter?

Answer - Jake answered this with not really a specific counter but more with some websites to check out to find a good web counter. See below in the links section for details.

Question - Brad has a PC and it trying to create digital videos and he is having trouble and his question is should he go Mac or stay with an PC and just tweak it?

Answer - The real problem is how much memory you have one your system, you definately need a lot of RAM. Also a fast hard drive is essential. This really shouldn't be a Mac versus PC issue. If you already have a PC then try to stay with it.

Question - Michelle from the internet wants to install Windows XP on her system but was told by a computer friend to always wait 6 months. Do you agree with that?

Answer - No. Windows XP is an excellent operating system based on NT technology. Windows XP is a great home version of Windows 2000 that gives a person a very complete computer experience.

Question - David from Des Moines was curious about how to increase his wireless connection distance.

Answer - Most wireless access points have removable antennas and you can get a more powerful antenna at Radioshack. If that doesn't work then look into a repeater.

Question - Chris from the internet wants to know why some links change color in Internet Explorer when you click on them and some links don't change color

Answer - This is defined in HTML of the website. You can also set a default setting in Internet Explorer then Tools to Internet Options. From there click Colors and set it there or to override a websites options then click Accessibility and set those settings there.

Question - Glen called in a question about scanned pictures. He saves his pictures to the My Pictures directory but now when he wants to change wallpaper on his desktop all these pictures show up as options and Glem would like to know if there is a setting he can turn off for this.

Answer - Chris has the same problem and at this point there doesn't seem to be an option you can turn off. The only real workaround is to save those pictures to a different directory. If you have a different fix then feel free to e-mail Chris.

Do not adjust your radio dial, the February 17th radio show is now posted. That static you hear about 15 minutes in is just Chris's batteries dying on him. A cup of coffee or two later and all was back to normal.

Brian Stevens - 2/14/2002 03:19:20 PM - 9735946

Hey everyone!! It's been awhile since we all chatted. Hopefully it won't be as long of a wait next time. Just as a reference this blog is for the 2-10-02 Gnomeshow.

The core of this show is LIVE CALLS!!! Yep you read it right. Now you can call 515-244-1350 every Sunday night from 7 PM to 9 PM CST and you might find yourself on the air. All that is required is a curiousity for technology and a good question for the GnomeTeam.

Questions and Answers -
Question - Michael from England bought a plantronics USB headset and microphone but when he tries to record with the microphone it doesn't work. What might be the problem?

Answer - Might need to set the preferred recording device in your control panel under Multimedia or Sounds depending on your Windows Operating System. Might need to uncheck use preferred recording device.

Question - Did Gourmet Coffee cause the DotCom bust?

Answer - No!!! Why would that cause the DotCom bust? Who here doesn't love Gourmet coffee. Once you switch, you don't go back.

Question - Rick from Ames says there was a special on TechTV in regards to BareBones systems and would like to know what the GnomeTeam thinks about them.

Answer - Chris believes it is a great thing especially for the seasoned user because not only do you save money but you can build a system that is perfect for you. Basically the important part is you have more choices. Just remember, you are your tech support for the most part. Jake says www.accessmicro.com is a great site for barebones systems and parts.

Just a side note, make sure you keep your systems cool. It isn't stupid to invest in a cooling system. If you system is locking up a lot then this may be the issue.

Question - Nathan the Netbloke wanted to know if there was a good site to do comparison shopping?

Answer - Head over to Lockergnome and check out the GnomeShopper. You can price compare online all sorts of stuff.

Question - Jim on Line1. His Windows95 machine crashed and now he wants to know if there are any DOS commands he can use to access his Backpack External Hard Drive or if he can salvage his data in anyway? Also he would like to go to Windows 98 and wants to know the specs required for the installation.

Answer - Machine may have seen it's better days, but don't put it out to pasture yet. If you can get your hand on a legitimate registered copy of Windows 98 then give it a shot but you may need more ran, don't expect a speed up on your system though. You can always try reinstalling Windows 95. As for salvaging data, of course you can, check out PowerQuest and they may have some software for it. Also if you have a friend with a CD Burner then hook up the external drive to their machine and just copy it to CD in case the Hard Drive is damaged. You could also as a last ditch effort you could go to DriveSavers.com

Tom from Des Moines has a Suggestion for Jim in the previous question. Hold down the Shift key or tap F8 during boot up and go into Windows Safe Mood and then just try rebooting. Sometimes this fixes it.

Question - Brian from Des Moines. Brian's old Pentium is on it's last leg and he is looking for a new system and wants to know Chris's suggestion for a new computer. More specifically a speedster.

Answer - Chris believes the Intel Northwood Pentium 4 is the best chip to get on your system. A firewire port would be preferred, a viable solution for this a SoundBlaster Audigy card which has a built in Firewire port. Chris also believes you should have atleast 4 open slots for upgrading in the future. As for Hard Drives, Intel is working on something called Serial ATA so if you can wait then do it but it is still a few months out. If you can get USB 2.0 then this is only to your advantage to get on your system. Definately try to get a CD-RW drive on your system and if you can then get a Plextor drive as these drives have burn proof technology to prevent buffer underuns. Another suggestion is a DVD and a CD-RW drive. A good site to check out locally is www.ditcorp.com another good site is Full Brain Technologies

What is blogging, well basically this is just a open diary for the internet. Check out Blogger for more information.
A great tool called Radio Userland 8.0.2 has just be revised and is available at http://radio.userland.com. It isn't free but it is great to also keep you up to date on your favorite sites which carry RSS or XML feeds and to get your own blog site up and going fairly easily.
Hey while we are on the subject check out WilWheaton.net Yes this is Wesley Crusher from Star Trek TNG but he's also a blogger so check him out. While you're out there surf on over to user.radioland.com

Each show might become available as a downloadable executable because of a piece of software from Crazy Ivan Productions called Boomer 4.0 Chris would like to hear what you think about that at Chris@Lockergnome.com

video card then check out the GeForce4 MX.

Jake Ludington - 2/11/2002 11:05:09 AM - 9614373

The February 10 show is now available. It's a little shorter than some shows due to technical difficulties at the station and a beta test of live calling. The good news is... Live calling works!! We are going to be tweaking it as we go, but for the moment we've got live calls, which means even more help and less mindless babble. Oh yeah, the show now plays on a popup window to avoid having to deal with the stream stopping if you lose focus.

Jake Ludington - 2/5/2002 02:34:48 PM - 9414331

Finally, at long last the January 27 show has been posted to the Web. I'll be including a link to the special best of show that ran on Febuary 3 opposite the Super Bowl in a matter of hours.
