MMORPGs Nowadays!

Hey, it’s been long since I was here last time.
I wanna talk about MMORPGs nowadays, just as the title suggests
I have some experience in MMORPG games and have formed some thoughts about them. MMORPGs in general have one thing in common as far as I’m concerned and that’s linear gameplay! Yeah, linear gameplay. How you ask? Well, MMORPGs are semi-symmetrical in how they approach gamers.
- They offer some crappy background story (lore) : No one (and by no one I mostly mean myself cuz I can’t possibly know how everyone feels!) reads these stories as they serve no true meaning to the gamer in terms of gameplay or quality of the play. Who cares if some god is fighting another for the control of Earthlings?
- They actually offer no storyline: It might be surprising so some, but MMORPG don’t offer any real storyline whatsoever! I mean if that’s not linear, I don’t know what is! (come to think of it, labeling MMORPGs as linear is kind of misleading since it suggests that MMORPGs actually have storylines).
- They offer the same no-brain, automated battle system: I’m actually sick of point-and-click all over the map! When I click, I expect to be rewarded with the opportunity to actually kill the thing! But no, that’s where I’m wrong! I’ve been proven so many times that I gave up looking anymore!
- They offer some repetitive quest types: It’s either kill x monsters, collect x items or find someone. It’s that simple!
- They offer no way to have a sense or feeling of satisfaction that comes from finishing things: MMORPGs don’t offer no true satisfying ending to your long slaved hours over the keyboard! (acutally the mouse, because that’s where you do most of the work). I’d like for once to feel like I’ve finished a MMORPG rather than be bored to death waiting for some reason to quit the game (mostly a new MMORPG releasing).
- They offer three options:Either grind your days to death, collect stuff and power-up equipment and become a top salesman or simply chat and find friends to hang out with. So, did any one notice there’s no GAME related option?
Anyways, I should say that I’ve found two interesting games.
AoC (Age of Conan) which has the long sought after real-time battle system and actual single player content! This game deserves a top ranking and a lot of applause just for these two features!! This game has a fee (monthly I’d guess) upon its release, the game is still in Beta phase.
Mabinogi which also has a real-time battle system. It also claims to feature a fantasy life meaning you could fish, work, go to school, learn music and even farm! Sound pretty cool to me and it’s worth a try, but I can’t because of region limitations!
Go to my other blog for more explanation about “region limitations” I mentioned.
