Hey You Guys!

Recently I took a little trip down memory lane thanks to YouTube. Somehow I wound up looking up old children’s shows that I used to watch as a kid. Sesame Street, Captain Kangaroo, The Great Space Coaster, 3-2-1 Contact to name a few. I found one that really brought back memories that some of you older folks out there might recall as well. It was called The Electric Company and I stopped everything to watch it, getting upset if I missed even the opening credits. I remember the energy the show had and its ability to capture my attention with the unique skits and other short scenes aimed at teaching me everything from counting to adjectives. I probably learned most of my sentence structure from that show and enjoyed every minute.

While searching the videos I noticed the difference between seasons in the opening credits and thought that it evolved a lot since I watched it. Then I came across a video titled “The Electric Company (2009) Intro.” Apparently they have brought the show back and the new opening credits, at least to me, seem a bit off topic. It starts out with the characteristic “Hey You Guys!” but then moves into some sort of hip hop meets rap type of theme. I have embedded each of the intros here, first the one I remember as a kid and then the “new” one. I’m not sure, but I could swear some of the kids are grabbing themselves in the latest version. What do you think of the new show? I have yet to see anything beyond the opening credits but from what I have seen, I say bring out the re-runs of the original. At least it doesn’t teach kids to grab themselves!

The Electric Company actually taught me to read before I got to kindergarten! I’ve always said that, if I ever meet Morgan Freeman, I have to thank him for making me literate.

I guess the new Electric Company probably had to update its style for the ’00s — the old theme song would have been a bit too ’70s — but 30 to 40 years from now, this “updated” version will be just as dated.

I guess they could have gone with classical music if they didn’t want their theme song to have an expiration date?

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. Morgan Freeman was the man back then. He had a sense of cool that no one since has been able to touch.

The new version also lacks Spiderman…which kind of kills it for me. Then there is the intro, even muting the music, the old intro was just more FUN. :) Man, that takes me back…wow. Now I feel old. heh

Hey wait…who you calling “older folks”? I’m only 36! lol

I remember in elementary school, the best part of the day was when we got to watch Electric Company in class. I loved all the songs Tom Lehrer did for the show.

Yeah, this new one is ‘of the times’, but it’s not something you can sing along with, while you could could with the original. It had an actual melody (however corny) that you could sing.
