As you can see from my Geeks profile page HERE, I am a huge Three Stooges fan and have been since the first time I saw the shorts when I was little. Now, The Three Stooges return to MGM after 40 years along with the Farrelly Brothers for a new movie! The last movie was made in 2000, aired by NBC but was never released in any other format. Starring Paul Ben-Victor as Moe Howard, Evan Handler as Larry Fine, John Kassir as Shemp Howard and Michael Chiklis as Curly (Jerome) Howard, It was a rather well done biography of the Three Stooges, their lives and their long history of comedy. While it was never published on any medium besides television, you can find it on You Tube, just search for Three Stooges Movie and download the 8 parts it is split into.
Now, on to the current movie. The movie was originally planned as 4 seperate “shorts” about the characters rather than the actors but has since evolved into a story of how the trio came together.
Surprisingly, the actors for the latest Stooge Movie are from the “A” list. Jim Carrey has been confirmed for the role of Curly Howard and is said to be gaining 40 pounds to approximate the heafty “super” stooge. Bonicio Del Toro has been cast for the role of Moe Howard and I believe both are great choices. Sean Penn had originally agreed to play the role of Larry Fine but has since backed out. This leaves the role of the “middle” stooge, Larry Fine vacant. There is no word if Shemp Howard will be incorperated into the movie and, in fact, there is little information to be found other than production is set to begin this fall and release sometime in the summer of 2010.
So, for you knuckleheads out there like me, what are your thoughts on this? The Three Stooges helped to develop and create today’s comedy and inspire countless comedians. Their legacy is seen in every comedy movie made since they did their shorts with Columbia. Personally, I am glad that it seems the movie will be about the actors rather than the characters. If it does turn out to simply be remakes of the original shorts, I doubt I will like it.
