Subvocal Speech

I was watching a show last night on the Science Channel and they were talking about technology called “Subvocal Speech” Basically, speaking to someone without moving your lips, you just think about saying the words. This works because when you speak, the brain sends signals yo your mouth to form the specific words. These signals are sent regardless of whether or not you actually move your lips. Electrodes pick up these signals and then translate them into speech. The ultimate ventriloquism.

This has obvious practical applications. When military or police want to coordinate a sting without speaking, which may give away their position. Of course, it also has other, less than desirable uses, such as students giving each other the answers to test questions or cheating at a poker game.

Other things the show touched on was a contact lens that is connected to the internet and acts as a monitor directly on your eye, awakening the ability to regrow lost limbs naturally, like a lizard can, and a number of other innovations that are not as far away as you might think.
