Back Surgery

As some of you know, I will be undergoing back surgery tomorrow to relieve pain caused by a herniated disk.  In less than an hour my brother will drive me to the hospital to be admitted and at 6AM or so, they will take me to the operating room for the surgery.  Up until this moment I was not worried in the least about the procedure.  I find myself now feeling a bit anxious and maybe a little scared about what the future holds.

I have been researching the procedure on the net and although it is a fairly common procedure, it is very close to the spinal cord and involves removal of some of the bone that covers it.  That makes me nervous.  Add to that the postop recovery will not be very easy.  According to the nurse I will not be able to drive for 2 weeks and I will not be able to lift, push, pull anything.  I won’t even be able to raise both arms over my head at the same time for a while, if I do I risk injuring myself pretty severely.

The pain I have been experiencing makes the surgery nessessary so i will go through with it, but I must say I am a bit worried about it now.  The nurse did tell me they will have standing orders for pain and sleep meds so i suppose I will immediatley ask for something for sleep when I get to my room.

If everything goes well i should be home Saturday evening and back chatting with everyone.  I have purchased a lap thingie that will allow me to use my laptop while I am recuporating.

Wish me luck all and (hopefully) I will talk to you all soon.

I had 3 discs worked on - it takes a while to get back on your feet - best advice - take it slow and double any time the doctors give you for recovery
