Cell Phone Use While Driving..Does Your State Ban It?

I was curious as to which states ban cell phone use while driving so I decided to do a little research.  Below is a list of States that ban (or will soon ban) either Handheld use, Text messaging, or both while driving.

California:  Handheld Ban, commercial drivers exempted until 2011
Connecticut:  Handheld Ban, some professions exempt
D.C. :  Handheld Ban, some professions exempt
Minnesota:  Text Messaging Ban (Effective 8/1/08)
New Jersey: Handheld Ban, Text Messaging Ban
Washington:  Handheld Ban, Text Messaging Ban
Virgin Islands:  Handheld Ban

Some states prohibit cell phone use by novice drivers (teens).  Several states heave legislation to ban cell phone use while driving, but as of yet, the law has not passed.

Because it has been found that it is not the fact that you are holding a phone to your ear that distracts you, but the conversation itself, some states are lobbying to ban all cell phone use while driving, either handheld or handsfree.

Greetings. I’m a Treo user, a driver, and a Pennsylvanian. There is more bad legislation attempting to make its way through the system here, concerning cell phone use in PA. I understand it calls for handsfree only.

I am highly opposed to this type of legislation. To me it seems like knee-jerk, gotta do something, feel-good legislation on the part of the congresscritters.

We already HAVE laws to deal with this. It’s called distracted driving and it’s already illegal in every state, city, and territory. Do these geniuses now want to make it MORE illegal to drive while yakking?

Driving while talking is no different than driving while drunk, driving while playing with the radio, driving while applying makeup, or driving while playing with your passenger. They’re all dangerous. It’s more selfishness on the part of drivers. But the LAST thing we need is Big Brother stepping in to `help’ us.

No thanks, I don’t need that kind of help. Take your cellphone laws (and your seatbelt laws) back where they came from. If you think this is going to stop a single person from mindlessly blathering while driving, you need to re-examine your thought process.

And that’s my five cents.
Thanks for a thoughtful blog.

Leftystrat is all that! ( He or she does not happen to have a lefty strat by any chance? ’cause I am in the market…) I totally agree with this view if you are distracted you are distracted period! The cell phone is no worse than arguing with a passenger, maybe we should all just drive alone with no radio all be required to wear our seat belts and hey why don’t we start requiring helmets while driving too you know it would make it more safe!!! Or maybe people could get real and use a little common sense If it distracts you don’t do it but lets stop telling everyone else what to do. There are plenty of laws out there already that penalizes the guy who causes an accident we don’t need any more preemptive measures thank you very much. Thanks for the research though it is good to know what I can not do where!

hey matt… I dont’want to hijack this blog. Feel free to write to me about guitars. Visit http://www.lockergnome.com/leftystrat or email leftystrat + the number one AT gmail dot com.

I had the pleasure of following a car one day. The speed limit was 5 mph as it was in a development. The car in front of me was barely rolling. Why you ask? Because he was trying to dial a number on his cell phone. Did he realize he had others behind him? No way! He was concerned with his mission and him alone.
You ever notice that when a car is going below the speed limit, they’re on the phone. They think they’re being cautious. I think this is very amusing. Do you think this could be a circumstance for road rage? Gee..I don’t know. DUH.

What Do You Think?
