Data Plan Vs. Tethering Plan

Pay heed to this article. There is a difference in surfing the net from your cell phone and connecting it to your computer to use as a modem. If you don’t have the right plan you could be in for a shock on your next bill.

Pay attention to your cell phone plan before you start using it for broadband activities. Imagine getting an $85,000 cell phone bill. Sure it’s a mistake. Well think twice, the bill is correct. You owe $85,000 for 6 week use of your cell phone.

This is what happened to 22-year-old Piotr Staniaszek of Calgary, Canada, who used his mobile phone to download misic and movies onto a computer. Staniaszek claims Bell Mobility should have notified him about his skyrocketing bill for just 6 weeks. Staniaszek normal bill is about $150, but ran up his bill when he signed up with Bell Mobility to pay $10 a month to use a mobile browser on his cell phone.

Staniaszek made the mistake of using his cell phone to download files to a computer which wasn’t a part of his contract. The plan is meant for internet surfing, e-mail access and file downloads to the phone itself. Staniaszek had been using the phone as a modem to download high-resolution movies onto a computer.

Bell Mobility did make a “Good Faith” adjustment and reduced his bill to about $1300.00

“To encourage broadband deployment and preserve and promote the open and interconnected
nature of the public Internet, consumers are entitled to connect their choice of legal devices that
do not harm the network.”

this kindof thing is bullshit and can’t be left to stand

Unfortunately/fortunately, US law does not apply in Canada.

And generally the CRTC bends over regularly and often for wireless carriers.

I wish I read this last night, I just ran a extra $250 on my phone bill… lucky the damage wasn’t as bad as this….
