What I am reading…

Just as I hope to use this blog to share information about products I use and love, I also hope to use it to share what I am reading. Some posts on will be on techie books I have picked up, some on stuff I am reading for relaxation.
To start this off, I thought I would share what is in my currently reading pile and my what I need to get to pile.
Currently, I am actively reading three books:

  • Mary Poppins, She Wrote by Valerie Lawson. This is the first real biography of P.L Travers. I love women writers, I love kids books, and I love bios. This one was a no-brainer for the list. It hasn’t disappointed. I admit that while I love Mary Poppins, I had never researched the author much. I had never come across a bio of Travers before, and now I know why. Travers wrote under a psuedonym (that I knew), but just as her name was a mask, much of what she made public was a mask as well. This bio goes into where she grew up, why she started to travel, and where Mary Poppins came from. It’s good reading, but deep in places. If you don’t like hearing about the Irish and English writing scene, skip this one. If, on the other hand, you want to know more about time, go for it.
  • My Life as a Furry red Monster by Kevin Clash. Kevin is the man inside the puppet that makes everyone giggle. He started building puppets as a young child and never stopped. The book is a series of short pieces about what Elmo has taught him about life. It is good for times when I want to get motivated, or when I only have a few minutes of time. It is pretty heavy on the positive vibes, getting almost too far over at times. That said, I am strongly considering it as a holiday gift for some people who have always been there for me. Elmo’s magic comes through like a shining star. Like to learn about the Muppets? Read this one!
  • Franklin and Winston by Jon Meacham. Bio of how these two great men meet, became friends, and changed the world. I’ve only just started it, so I don’t have opinions yet. I’ll let you know.

So, what’s on the waiting list?

  • Iwoz by Wozniak himself. Ok, I am a sucker for anything by a member of the Apple team, especially if it tells their side of how they changed the world. I may use a PC, but I cut my teeth on the AppleII and the Mac.
  • Variable Star by Robert Heinlein and Spider Robinson. A science fiction great finishes a missing story left by one of the two greatest. Since I own just about everything that Heinlein ever wrote, this one was snapped up as soon as I saw it on the shelf.
  • 1635: The Cannon Law by Eric Flint and Andrew Denne. I fell in love with Eric Flint’s writing thanks to the books he did with Mercedes Lackey. When I picked up the Galileo book in this series, I fell in love. I went back and read all of the others I could find. This one is the last in my stack of 1633 books, so I am kind of holding off. I am afraid I will finish it before the next one is available.
  • A Madman Dreams of Turing Machines by Janna Levin. An imagined tale of Godel and Turing by a woman who never knew either of them but is obsessed by both. Recommended to me by the same person who recommended Godel, Escher, and Bach. Can’t be too bad. :)
  • Tailchaser’s Song by Tad Williams. Cats on a quest. What’s not to love?
  • Glasswrights’ Progress by Mindy L. Klasky. Recommended highly by a friend. But I probably won’t start it until I can find the first one in the series. I didn’t know it was a series when it was recommended.

That’s the top six anyway. Maybe one of these blog entries will be what I can’t resist re-reading annually!

kathy - loved the book 1633 but realized there was a book before it. Didn’t know there were any afterwards. Two questions - Is the first one published? What are the names of the others in the series?

Share the wealth!!!

Sorry about the delay in getting the comment posted - I was out of town. You can find the other books in the 1633 series by doing a search in Amazon, but the most complete list of Eric’s contributions can be found on his blog:
http://www.ericflint.net/index.php/bibliography/
In addition to the novels, there are several books of short stories. The biggests sets of these are in the Grantville Gazette books. There are a total of 7 of these, three of which show on Amazon. The best summary list I have found is actually on Wikipedia at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grantville_Gazette
One final note, Wikipdeia also has a page on the 1632 universe. Check it out at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1632_series
Kathy (who is wondering if this shouldn’t have been a second blog entry instead of a comment…)
