Back to the basics in this week's Brainbench certification. Windows 95/98, which still has a very broad presense in homes and corporations alike, is one of those things you have to know if you plan to get into tech support. When I started this test, I immediately thought I made a mistake because of the differences in today's operating systems and Windows 95/98. Granted, Windows 98 isn't exactly ancient, but I haven't touched some of the areas covered in the test in quite some time, and Windows 2000/XP is just different enough that it threw me for a bit.
As I went along, though, I found that it's really like riding a tricycle. Once you learn, you really don't forget, and it's hard to tip over unless you take a sharp right turn. By the end of the 40 question test, my brain-housing- group got a nice workout in digging up the basics of Windows 9x computing. I actually enjoyed taking this one, and I think you might as well. Give it a shot, this one is on the list of over 40 free tests available at Brainbench.com, so you really have nothing to lose.
Last week, I took the Windows 2000 Desktop Administration exam and scored a 3.66. Good enough for the 95th percentile. Two Gnomies out there impressed me by whomping my score. Arley Dealey scored a 4.53 and Michael Styles hit 4.21 out of 5.0, both of which were in the 99th percentile. A job VERY well done guys!
The lot of Brainbench exams includes much more than just technology related stuff, so look over the list. Everything from language skills to typing efficiency to non-technical industry subjects are covered. many of which are free exams. For the paid tests, Brainbench offers subscription plans that will significantly reduce the cost if you're interested in taking several tests.
