Twitter Gets A New Look

I went to the Twitter website this afternoon and was surprised to see that they changed their home page. It’s now designed in darker blue colours and now has a larger emphasis on search and trending topics.
Although it may seem simple, Twitter has also added an additional step into signing into your account. You now have to click “Sign In” to reach the login window, which is located at the top right hand corner of the web page. I know it makes me really sound like a bag to say this it was a bad idea, but was it necessary to make your users work more to sign in?
As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, Twitter has made their home page more search oriented. The first thing you see as you load the page is a huge search box in which you can look through Twitter’s archive of Tweets. In addition, they’re also now showing the most popular topics within the minute, day and week on the front page. This I’ve actually found to be very useful as I can now see what everyone is talking about before signing into my account.
Overall, the new Twitter homepage design was very well done. Since they really thrive on live information adding the trending topic features and search was very smart of them. It seems to me that Twitter has taken a very critical step when it comes to real time information.
What are your thoughts on their new home page?
