Why Blogging Is a Thing Of The Past

When blogging first started getting hot in the early years of the millennium people all over the place were dying to get their hands on one. Basically, it was an online journal whereas the content you wrote is published online for the entire world to see. Blogging eventually started to really catch on mid 2005, with virtually anyone who was Internet savvy jumping on the band wagon.
Then Google Adsense/Adwords came out, revolutionizing what the online blog was about. Publishing content online was now not only for fun and entertainment, but it was now becoming a serious business opportunity for authors, entrepreneurs, and the regular average Joe to generate some sort of income online. Although for many people the only thing that was being made off of blogging was petty cash, quite a bit of people where beginning to catch on to the term of “niche blogging” and using Wordpress to generate a substantial source of cash online.
Wordpress then evolved from being a regular blog platform to a fully featured content management system. It wasn’t just for distributing your thoughts online, it was now an easy-to-use software for content creators to make money online.
Blogs aren’t really blogs anymore. In fact, it’s difficult to find in modern times to find a blog which hasn’t began focusing on the money and not the content. I wouldn’t be surprised if soon a replacement for Wordpress will come that’s priority will be to assist entrepreneurs in the distribution of their content rather than blogging.
Where do you think blogging is headed? What type of content manegement system do you use? Is blogging really blogging?

…thinking about how you wrote this post on your blog and ended the copy right at the level of five ads which take up more real estate than the post itself. Blogs might be dead. I think about killing mine all the time.

Sorry, but I’m going to have to disagree with you. I don’t think that blogs are dead.
And, I don’t think that all blogs are just about making money.
Now, let’s be honest, there are plenty of blogs out there that are all about making money.
And let’s be honest, there are some content blogs that are trying to make some money.
But I think the difference really comes down to whether a person is blogging because they want to add to the conversation on a particular topic (besides “making money by blogging”) - or if they’re just blogging because they want to make money.
I read plenty of blogs, mainly about education, technology and politics - that have good content.
My personal belief is that the creators of those blogs have something to say - and they generally do a good job of covering their topic area - and that’s why I keep going back to read them.
And you know what, I don’t begrudge them trying to make some money off of their blog - because I don’t think they’re just in it for the money (I could be wrong - but that’s my gut feeling).

I agree with you a lot of blogs these days are for making money or promoting themselves.
I use Joomla, and Wordpress.

Chris,
Blogging isn’t dead (yet). However, with so much people diving into blogging without a real perspective of what it really is or how it evolved, the “trash” in the internet has grown too much.
Think about it — blogging is about writing. But is everyone equipped with know-how and experience to write correctly, properly, respectfully, inspiringly and factually?
In due time, when the trash dump becomes a mountain, people of the web might stop reading and focus their attention to the next information media in the virtual world. Whatever that is, we may soon find out.

I’m pretty sure that this was written fairly tongue-in-cheek, or in a way meant to spark debate, rather than to make a simple statement. If BB had truly believed that blogging was dead, instead of posing it here, he’d have simply Twittered it, and left it at that…

I wouldn’t say blogs is becoming a thing of the past, it is evolving into just more than personal opinions of the poster. Now blogs are becoming more of source of information, how a poster may found out something by accident, etc. If you noticed now when you search for information, the sites containing the info will either be of a forum or blog format. And what is wrong with trying to make a little bit of money doing it also?

I agree with Flint who has described my view that there are blogs for the content too and not only for the money.
In addition to that, a few things that i’ll add is that
1. trying to earn using a free hosted blog is ‘cheap’. in all sense of the word. I try to focus on good content, so I need not feel that bad about publishing on a free blog, because that’s what I can afford right now.
2. There are bloggers who earn good revenue and publish good content as well on their blogs. But blogging needn’t be that hard.
3. There are hardly any blogging evangelists who spread the word of blogging from the ‘focus on content’ point of view. All want you to be Scoble or Arrington. Be the first to report….and get money!
4. Blogs are not dead, people’s attention spans are vastly reduced with microblogs. Its easy to retweet on links, but you’re much more worth if you author the content behind that link.
p.s. is this numbered list style of writing of mine, unfit for comments? I just thought up what I wanted to say easier with this kind of writing.

Blogging about the death of the blog: either it’s a massively failed self referential joke, or just massive fail.
Either way, this is really just solipsistic navel gazing, mapping what’s wrong with this blog to being wrong with blogs as a whole. Yes, there are wikis which are ad infested and useless too; that’s evidence of their creators’ quality, not the quality of the platform.
You want to find blogs that don’t suffer these problems? Look for blogs that don’t have ads and aren’t pushing product. They’re out there, and they’re not claptrap.

Blogging certainly has moved on and judging from some of the blogs out there trying to monetize I think they have forgotten one crucial factor … people search for content, for information, and if your blog is more interested in making money … it will eventually fail.

It’s not hard at all to find blogs that don’t write for money. You can find them EVERYWHERE!
