Young Girl Sends Over 14,000 Text Messages In One Month!

There was an interesting report on Sync Blog today about a young girl who text messaged over fourteen thousand text messages in one month. Now if you narrow that down to a daily average it shows up at a whopping 484 text messages a day. Your probably feeling sorry for the parents who would’ve had to pay a wallet pinching three thousand dollars on a Pay and Talk deal. Luckily the family was on a thirty dollar a month plan with their carrier(AT&T).
What do you think of this? Should parents be more controlling over how much their child is using their mobile device? Do you think there is a certain age that children should not be carrying such a device? I personally would be lucky to send one text message a year. 14 000 a month seems more like an addiction than a hobby, however it’s common for the average teenager in the united states to send 1,742 messages a month.

As someone who has never sent even one text message in their entire life (despite the fact that I must carry up to three separate phones when I’m on call), I fail to see why anyone would want to use such an impersonal and inefficient manner of communication? Can someone please explain to me why people ‘text message’, instead of just making a normal call? It’s obviously much slower!

My thoughts are that it’s fine for youngsters to carry them as soon as they are old enough to use one but for emergency use only and there’s the caveat. Phones should be rigged to dial only the emergency services, their home number or perhaps those of a few trusted friends or relatives. Certainly no texting. I might seem a tad old-fashioned but I think that “text-speak” is wrecking the art of normal conversation!

@Buffet I agree with you 100%. I personally think the relation between text messaging and young children is fueled more by an addiction than anything else. Text messaging is used in classrooms and other places where they shouldn’t be texting. However it’s much slower than just phoning the person.

As a teenager you are in school, clubs, sports, you hang out with friends and in general you talk to a bunch of people. At least that is the norm. With so much going on around you it is easier to communicate the basics of what you want to say rather then calling a whole bunch of people. Its easier to text mom and dad asking for a ride and at the same time texting a friend about the time of the football game. It is also cheaper because I know that I have unlimited texting yet I only have a certain number of min. a month. I am not certain but I am guessing that you are all a little older and you dont really understand some of the stuff we do. I do agree that 14,000 a month is excessive and perhaps the situation needs to be addressed, yet lumping all text messaging in with the situation being discussed is not fair to people who rely on quick communication. I would rather have my children addicted to text messaging then drugs or something even worse.

Actually I’m very young. The problem I’m seeing in class is that it’s becoming an addictive habit and kids are doing this more than actually paying attention, and are therefor paying the price of low grades.

Do you realize that you are sending a text message to a blog right now? Kind of Ironic…. Evolution folks…. We all do it….
No one is right…. no one is wrong….
Think of the people that sent a text message that saved there life in a car or a plane…
To say there last “I love you”….
In reality ?
Who is saying what is reality is?
Old fashioned?
Sorry….. You would not be online….. You would have a candle and maybe some clothes or a loin cloth….
So leave the poor girl alone….
Maybe she had social phobia and this is her way of going to the next level of what makes her happy. Yes that is right happy…. Imagine that …. I love opinions like these that people write….
FYI:
The Briz
You are all reading this while she is sending a text to someone she actually can see & knows…
May peace and happiness be with you all…..

That Comment Was all over the place-
First off- There is no opinion in this post. I was merely stating the facts.
Second- You don’t need to stretch the meaning of Text Message. Yes I’m writing “text” on a blog, but we all know I was talking about a Cellphone.
Thirdly- “Old Fashioned” Didn’t even come up in the post.
