Windows Vista

Is it me, or are the hardware requirements for Windows Vista a bit on the stringent side? I mean really, 2 gigabytes of RAM don’t even cut it. At work, I’ve been recommending new machines to be equipped with 8 gigabytes of RAM because of Windows Vista, and the bloat associated with it. Don’t get my wrong, I like Microsoft products, but gee-whiz, Vista is the biggest memory hog.

What are your thoughts on this, folks?

Which is why I switched to Ubuntu Linux. I’m fed up of having to spend so much on Windows+the hardware it needs AND STILL having everything get stuck/not working/etc (not to mention the virus / spyware / adware headache).

I’ve been very happy with Ubuntu and I’m *so* glad I switched. I’ve been actively converting my friends too.

Now how is 8 gigs of RAM going to help you when Vista can only address half that (and leaves you with only about 3 Gigs free)? Are you recommending the 64bit version of Vista?

8 gigs of RAM is going to help (yeah, right) because Windows Vista x64 is the way we’re going. Oops, I assumed readers would of known this. I am not even going to bother entertaining the thought of Windows Vista32.

Actually Windows Vista will leave you with far less than 3 gigs of RAM if we’re using a 4 gig model. Far, far less.

WTF you on about i find Vista runs grate on my system and i only have AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Singlecore with 1.5 gig of DDR1 ram and 40gig hard drive and it runs faster than XP did on my system so all this stuff people are on about is stupid Vista is 100% better than XP

Arran: And I assume you’re a home user and not a corporate user? I’ve been beta testing Vista many months before it was released, and we all come to the same conclusion that it’s a memory/resource hog.

By the way, you might want to ask yourself why the National Institue of Standards has banned Vista? Things that make you go hmmmm.

Also, Vista performance is related to what one is doing with it. Ex: What applications do you have currently installed on your Vista machine?

Please describe your environment that uses this much memory. I assume you started with Vista 64. What else?

Roy, forget that. Out of the box, look at how many processes are running on a freshly built Windows Vista box; compare that number with the amount of processes running on an XP machine.

And, what does the Aero interface really get you (besides something the Linux and Apple world has had for years), besides being forced to purchase a video card capable of running it?

Hello,

Microsoft Windows Vista does require more memory than Microsoft Windows XP or 2000, but it does have more features built-in, so it should not be surprising that it requires a faster processor and more memory. If there are features or services you do not need, you could try disabling these and seeing if that improves memory utilization and system performance. In my experience, though, the hardware costs are usually overshadowed by software and maintenance costs, especially when one looks at the total cost of ownership over multiple years.

It would be helpful to know what your current workstation hardware configuration and operating system/application software load is before commenting on such things as memory usage. Once you have posted a blog entry discussing the applications normally installed and how much memory they consume, perhaps some of your readers could comment on ways to configure them so they use less resources or suggest alternate applications.

Memory hog? 8 gigs? I am running 3 gigs and it works perfectly. I play Battlefield 2142 on high graphics on a 256 agp and it runs smoothly. Vista is way better than XP. It’s speed on processes is way faster.

I have an AMD Sempron 3000+ 2.0GHz.: I.5 GB RAM: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700LE

Installed VISTA Home Premium 7/6/07. I know most tech sites, blogs, etc. say min. of 2GB and 512MB of video. I purchased a 1GB memory stick….thats it. My video is only 128MB, this will have to do for now. Out of the box…….the only problem I had was my sound card. I have an old Creative LIVE. I used 3rd party software to get it to work right. Thats it! Vista is running great! At idle using 29% of 1.5GB. When I use the ‘flip’ feature with about 8 windows open and iTunes running, it jumps to 41%, not too bad. If you can, install a second HDD for virtual memory. Microsoft says keep the existing page file size on root, then create another, of the same size on the second drive. This really gives a boost.

I had to purchase Vista, my career path is IT. A few prospects requires knowing Vista. I still like XP Pro and run it on my other machines. I dual boot XP on one machine with Kubuntu, doing Linux too! As with XP Pro, no lock ups, freezes, error messages. This was a clean install. I’m not a fan of upgrades.

There are allot of Microsoft haters. I’m not one of them. I like choices, Windows, MAC, Linux. Most of the world runs on Windows, you need to know it and be up speed if you are to pursue this field as I have.

This is the first time I have posted a comment like this.

I bought a new Toshiba Laptop with Vista P. It needed 31 updates out of the box. That is so lame. A program not ready for the market. All of us are testers in Microsofts world. They should release a CD. Because there will be so many more downloads before it is ready. Every day it downloads something new. Computer is always busy.
