College Football: Worse to bet on than than the Weatherman

Its 2 AM and I was bored and checked out the score of the Louisville/Uconn game and to my amazement, Uconn beat a team that was suppose to be a bowl contender at the beginning of the year (on top of that Uconn is on top of the Big East, and to be fair Lville did lose to the Orangemen). This only shows how crazy college football has gotten, USF #2? (well they were). So I have given up on the whole pool betting thing because I know when I start picking Michigan State over Ohio State, Ohio State and all the other favorites will actually play like they should.
But while this may be bad for the gamblers out there it really shows how far College football has come, now the little guys can compete with the big dogs. The reason? Less scholarships to dole out. There was a time when Barry Switzer (OU head coach 1973-88 Cowboys HC 94-97) would hand out scholarships simply to keep a player from going to Texas, Arkansas or any of the other schools they faced. He may never play, but as long as Texas didn’t get their hands on him Switzer was fine with benching him. Now teams have to decide who gets what and those good players fall to teams like USF, Indiana, Illinois, Appalachian State. While students and alumni would “always” stand behind their team, schools are now able to pull in fans who didn’t go to the school, while this was previously only something big names schools could do.
While I will miss the thrill of picking right, if that is all I have to give up for a more entertaining season so be it. Here’s to all the underdogs, and here’s to this not being a one year fluke.
But I need to say it: Go Sooners!
