New PS3 Says Bye To Older Brother

Sony finally announced the long rumored 40GB PS3, and it is shipping Oct 10th (well at least for our buddies across the pond, nothing confirmed for us though). The price is 399 Euros, which is about 564 US dollars, but that is not the big part of the story. Gizmodo is reporting that the PS3 won’t have backward capability. Yeah, I guess Sony got sick of people not buying PS3 games and playing the PS2 games on it.
This really begs the question: What were they thinking? The PS3 has no real killer app (except maybe Resistance) like the 360, or the price like the Wii. I have always been a Sony boy, but now I don’t really know what to think. I sit here and look at my Wii and 360, and realize, I haven’t touched a Playstation in over 4 months (Well I do use the PSP). Alas Sony, I wish you luck with your TVs, computers, etc., but like the Unicorns with Noah’s Ark, you missed the home gaming boat and it isn’t coming back.

PS3 has always been overpriced and not, in my opinion, worth the money it costs. The BluRay is nice, and backwards compatibility was one of the best things it has had going for it since there is such a huge library of PS2/PS1 games out there. Losing backwards compatibility will alienate customers and potentially buyers and point them at a system that does offer it, such as Xbox 360. If PS3 were to have a decent price drop, it might then be worth the price tag, but for now, it isn’t in my opinion. From my own experience, I would suggest that many current and/or former Sony/Playstation fans have abandoned or are abandoning the PlayStation platform for Xbox and Wii given the price and lack of exclusive or substantially better features/services.
