SmartFTP is now PaymeFTP

Ever since I have been building web sites, I have been using Smart FTP for my ftp client.  Now, after many years of dedicated usage, I must now pay them to use it, for the low, low price of $36.95 for the “home” version and $49.95 for the “pro” version.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great application and the developers should be compensated for their work, but, having to all of a sudden be without a decent ftp client is just wrong.

I think they should offer a free version, without all the features, and I hope they will in the future when they realize their mistake.  As there are still free ftp clients out there that work just fine.  They may not be as fast or a feature filled as Smart FTP but they WORK, without the price tag.  But charging “home” users for an application is not in anyone’s best interest.

The other alternatives I have been experimenting with are winSCP, goFTP, and the firefox plugin (bleh), fireFTP.  I’ve used filezilla before and it’s just too slow for my needs.  So I have another 10 days to find a decent ftp client.

What do you use? and what makes it work for you?

CoreFTP is good. And it’s free.
