Vista vs. OS X

Tons of people compare these two operating systems, but I have yet to read an article that truly tells someone which is better. And… this article won’t be any different. If you’re looking for an article to tell you which to buy, keep looking. What this article will do is try to attempt to tell you which is right for you. I love them both, and think both have a place in the OS world. And Linux… well… unless you’re an Open Source whore, don’t bother.

Vista is a great OS from (IMHO) a great company. As I said in a previous article, I don’t give a crap if it copied OS X. If Vista did it better, that’s all I care about. As for Widgets vs. Gadgets, I feel they are both about the same. The only strength Widgets have is that they have more apps than gadgets has at the moment, but I have no doubt that Gadgets will catch up. As for searching… can you really blame Microsoft for copying OS X’s Spotlight? Spotlight is simply amazing search technology. I really don’t think there is much room for improvement in that area. Therefore, unless Microsoft was willing to ship a lesser product, it really had no choice but to copy. All in all, Vista is a great OS for the businessman, the gamer (hands down), and in some ways, the general home user. If you have grown up with Windows, I see no real reason to change. One of the main reasons you may not want to use Vista is if you have older hardware. If you do, you might not have drivers for it readily available on Vista. As for Mac, it will likely Just work [/advertisement whoring].

Mac OS X is a great OS. There’s really not much to be said about it that hasn’t been said above. If you are a creative professional, OS X could be the perfect computer for you. Macs even have a place in the business world. if you are looking for that killer gaming rig, though… keep moving.

There are 2 big differences between OS X and Vista. One runs only on a reletively closed platform, the other is able to be run on a great deal of hardware. The other is from a company that innovates [or covers their theft really well] and the makers of Vista are blatant about their theft of ideas and designs, and are brilliant only in an advertising and promotional sense.

This is not a new idea [I am happy to admit when someone else has a great idea, unlike MS] but if Apple ever decided to start coding some drivers for the other Wintel hardware out there, and remove the TPM coding from OS X, then offer it without ties to its own hardware…MS would FEEL THE PAIN very swiftly.

I just got a new tower and it has Vista installed. My problem is, nothing I had installed earlier is comaptable with it. How do I either go back to XP or an earlier version? If I can’t, how do I upgrade my existing things to be able to use them with Vista?

According to MS [from an employee at a presentation of Vista and Office 2007] if you have a copy of Vista, you can use its serial number with a copy of XP to downgrade for your stated reasons. The presenter did not, however, state what version of XP was able to be used. I would assume [check with MS first] that any home version of Vista could downgrade to XP Home, and Business to XP Pro….I’ll assume that ANY copy of Ultimate purchased would have the peripherals to go with it.

Apparently this policy started with XP and when many things did not work with XP, people were allowed to downgrade to Win 2000, for peripheral compatibility.

It would figure a softie would not “give a crap” if Microsoft ripped off another company.

I use both Mac OS X and Vista on a daily basis and I must say Technology moves at fast rates, by the time you get the latest mac, someone in the PC world has built a better faster, more up to date PC which can be updated even further as time progresses. As far as the OS war goes…. Vista wins hands down end of, reasons being is not just visually based but because Vista has a lot more potential Microsoft has just begun where as OS X has reached a dead end with leopard Multi OS feature ‘bootcamp’ with this feature who the hell would want OS X? people will buy macs just for the sake of putting XP or VISTA on it.
