Straight Talk – No BlackBerry Support And AT&T Now Available

Posted by on Sep 2, 2010 | 13 Comments

During the past few weeks I have received quite a few comments to the three articles I have written concerning Straight Talk. For some of the questions that were asked, I did not have an answer. So I contacted Straight Talk Customer Service and this is its response to two of the issues I was asked about:

Dear Ron,

Thank you for your interest in Straight Talk Wireless. We are responding to your recent inquiry.

We understand that you would like to inquire if a BlackBerry phone can be used with Straight Talk. We also believe that you want to inquire when AT&T service will begin.

We regret to inform you that you cannot use a BlackBerry phone with Straight Talk since we are only able to activate handsets manufactured specifically for Straight Talk Wireless.

With regards to your concern about the service with AT&T, we are happy to inform you that we have already started the service. You can buy phones which has the SIM card since these are the phones that are utilizing AT&T towers to have its service. However, we cannot assure that every area will have the coverage of the service. In order for us to check the availability of the service in a specific area, we need to have its ZIP code.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact one of our customer care representatives at 1-877-430-2355.  For your convenience, our representatives are available Monday-Sunday from 8:00 AM to 11:45 PM EST.

Thank you for being a Straight Talk Wireless customer.  We appreciate your business.

Sincerely,

Straight Talk Wireless

I hope this answers some of the questions that were asked.

Comments welcome.

So will my ATT blackberry work?

      Hi AP,
I would contact ST customer service and ask them.

  • Shelby

I was interested in this so I contacted Straight talk myself and asked if I could use my at&t phone with the straight talk service. The woman just continued to repeat that Straight talk can not activate At&t phones, no matter how I rephrased the question.
    Pretty frustrating…

Thanks Shelby for the info. I’m going to call ST to get a answer to this question.
      I’ll get back to you.

  • Shelby

Hey Ron, just checking to see if you’ve heard back from ST yet.

    • http://wp3.lockergnome.com/nexus/blade/ Ron Schenone

      Hi Shelby,
It took me some time, but I finally got the number to corporate.
I am going to be calling them in the AM. Stand by………….

      Hello Shelby,
OK corporate told me the following. ST can not activate AT&T phones that are specifically
made to work with the ST network. ONLY models made for ST by AT&T will work. This
makes sense since only certain models they or Walmart sells work with the Verizon
      network.

I hope this helps. Regards, Ron

    Ron,

Thanks for all the info on ST and its AT&T based service. Based on your last comment, am I correct to assume that I cannot transfer the SIM card from an ST phone to a network unlocked Sony Ericsson W518a?

    Thanks for all the info.

Unfortunately I do not believe you can.

I was concerned because all my employees ( around 10 of them) all had blackberries but the bills for my company were getting outrageous and I had to cut costs.. so I got them all straight talk phones. No more blackberries but their phones are great and people aren’t complaining. I am saving more than 50 dollars a month and the service is on the same verizon network that it was on before. It really is great.

  • Suzann

they told me the same as they told Shelby, the guy told me that they could not use at&t phones at all they were just using the towers.

  • relic23

oh yeah for at&t towers are available! thats what I heard. and verizon. I swear it is so great. I didnt believe it cause the guy selling it to me at walmart was kinda shady. But the phones have been absolutely fantastic. The coverage is by far the best I’ve everhad. Im about 30 miles west of a pretty large city in kentucky so if thats anything.

I think there are a lot of people, who make the mistake of taking straight talks claim of nationwide coverage a little too literally. The coverage they speak of is a combined CDMA, and GSM coverage area. It’s important to realize that these networks are not compatible at all, and that a person has to choose between one or the other, or carry phones. Seniors especially, wouldn’t ordinarily know this, and would easily be duped into buying any-old-phone.
