Doctors Warn: Only Use Reputable Web Sites To Self Diagnose Your Medical Problems

Posted by on Jul 5, 2010 | 7 Comments

In a new study being  published in the July, 2010 issue of  the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, physicians are warning us about self diagnosis of our medical problems and the commercial sites we may visit. Many of us use Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other search engines to try and diagnose a medical problem we may have. Unfortunately, some of the recommended sites are commercial sites that are more interested in promoting their products than providing valid medical information.

According to one article it states that:

In terms of content, Dr. Karunakar says, nonprofit sites scored the highest, then academic sites (including medical journal sites), and then certain non-sales-oriented commercial sites (such as WebMD and eMedicine). The least accurate information sources were newspaper articles and personal web sites. Commercial sites with a financial interest in the diagnosis, such as those sponsored by companies selling a drug or treatment device, were very common but frequently incomplete.

“About 20 percent of the sites that turned up in the top ten results were sponsored sites,” Dr. Karunakar says. “These site owners are motivated to promote their product, so the information found there may be biased. We also found that these sites rarely mentioned the risks or complications associated with treatment as they are trying to represent their product in the best possible light.”

One should be aware of sites that promote medical products and instead should look to sites such as WebMD and eMedicine for reliable information. With that being said, is self diagnosis using online sources a valid replacement for seeing a doctor?

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

No reputable doctor will recommend you self diagnosis.

That’s no tot say here isn’t useful and helpful information out there.

It’s recommended you see your doctor and let the doctor give you a blood test.

If finances are a reason for not seeing your doctor go anyway,
    he’s their to help.

I provided a little information on this topic here:

The Doctor says to the patient, “You’re sick”.
The Patient says, “I want a second opinion”.
    The Doctor says, “You’re Ugly”.

    Thanks to Henny Youngman.

    That’s my opinion of that.

I have Grave’s Disease, and have blatant symptoms since early childhood. I was never diagnosed, even after going in for directly related symptoms. About 10 years ago I was on my death bed, and still no one knew what was wrong with me. It was due to the Internet that I was able to diagnose myself, and later had a doctor corroborate on my findings.
As a natural healer I come across people, who are misdiagnosed by their doctors all the time, it is a common occurrence. Doctors treat symptoms, and not root causes unfortunately. Thank goodness they never diagnosed me, or I would have had my thyroid destroyed, and be on hormone therapy the rest of my life. Now my condition is in 100% remission, and I am far healthier than most people my age.
What I recommend is people do look up on the internet what could be possibly wrong with them, and find any and all possibilities….then consult a doctor, or two, or three. The best thing to do is seek treatment from a natural doctor, rather than conventional, because the one will just treat you with drugs that cause other issues, while the other can actually heal the root issue. Never be dependent on doctors, and do listen to your body, instincts, and learn as much as you can. Use common sense and look around you at others in your life…are doctors actually curing these people…or making them worse in the long run? It is kind of amusing more health problems exist now with our ‘advanced’ medical system than existed prior.
