Mozilla Releases An Update For Firefox – Stops Plugin Crashes

Posted by on Jun 23, 2010 | 10 Comments

Mozilla has released a new update for their popular Firefox browser to version 3.6.4. The folks at Mozilla state that the new release will help stop crashes caused by third party plugins. Over on their blog site Mozilla folks stated:

Mozilla recognizes that third-party plugins provide important functionality in many of today’s websites. At the same time, plugins can lead to problems for users as they browse. With the ability to automatically alert users when they have out of date plugins, and now crash protection, Firefox 3.6.4 allows users to experience all the content they love without any of the hassles.

At this time Firefox offers crash protection for Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime and Microsoft Silverlight on Windows and Linux computers. Support for other plugins and operating systems will become available in a future Firefox release.

To get the updates go to Help – Check For Updates.

I would recommend you get the update ASAP.

Comments welcome.

      Hi Dick,
Let us know if it does.

I was checking out Widows Mobile site from a link in their Mobile newsletter that just dropped in my box and the Silverlight plugin crahsed about 8x -after which I gave up. The error was in WindowsNT (I still run XP Pro SP3 fully updated). My Firefox is up to day ‘Check for updates’ within Firefox advise I’m all up to date. So, as far as I’m concerned, Mozilla hasn’t fixed the issue. Sad, because I’m a long time fan of Firefox, but I’ve been using IE more and more lately. The fox is still my default, but I may change that anytime soon.

I guess the really BIG question is: does this also eliminate the problem experienced in 3.6.3 for the newly discovered virus threat?

Couldn’t they have just left the block in place for all the malware that Microsoft has been trojaning in through Windows Update and Windows Live Essentials?

Essentials 2010 so far is sneaking in Bong Bar and SilverBlight without asking.

This is not good. Now there is a process that runs called “plug-in container.exe” whose purpose is to keep Firefox running even if the Adobe Flash plug-in crashes. You can change the timing (about:config). IDK…. All I know is this process runs and then everything freezes and stays that way. So it’s not so good I’m thinkin. Useless, stupid, and futile are more words that come to mind.
