Diskeeper HyperFast For SSD – Does It Work?

Posted by on May 12, 2010 | 9 Comments

I use Diskeeper Pro on my personal laptop system and enjoy having a set it, forget it, deframentor that takes care of my hard disk for me. Over the years using Diskeeper Pro has made a difference in the performance of my computer systems. So when I saw that Diskeeper was offering what they call ‘HyperFast’ for SSD I decided to take a look. According to the blur on their web site, the folks at Diskeeper state:

New HyperFast solid state drive optimizer technology from Diskeeper Corporation is the first ever optimizer exclusively designed for faster performance and extended lifespan of Solid State Drives running on Microsoft® operating systems. It is nothing short of a “must have” for all the new SSD laptops or “netbooks” that have entered the mobile computing market.

Taking SSD technology beyond the barriers
Solid State Drives (SSD) promise to deliver cutting edge speed.
But most PC operating systems are not designed to exploit the SSD potential. Because of this, drive performance degrades dramatically over time and increased I/O traffic significantly shortens the drive’s life expectancy.

The Proof
To demonstrate this fact, benchmark tests were performed on an 8GB SSD in a simulated real world scenario to depict a customer’s environment over 6 months. With HyperFast SSD optimization enabled, performance gains were automatically realized with 5.9x faster reads, 19.5x faster writes, 3.9X faster random reads and 9.0X faster random writes (higher numbers indicate higher performance).

HyperFast is being offered as part of the Diskeeper software package for an additional $10 per license. With the increase of popularity of SSD drives is HyperFast worth the extra $10?

If you have tried HyperFast on a SSD please share your findings, good or bad.

Comments welocme.

Can’t afford an SSD of any decent size. I’m waiting for the early adopters to plow the field so to speak and the prices to come down.

I’m a little troubled by the lifetime figures for these drives. So many cycles and then they die. I’d like to see that change too.

      I’m waiting as well.

Far too many people worry about the lifespan of SSD drives. It’s best to think of it this way – no matter how much you use it, an SSD drive will still OUTLAST the life expectancy of the remaining hardware in your PC!

In other words, you’ll likely replace your entire PC 2 to 3 times (upgrading to newest technology) before the SSD drive will die.

Remember – your current hard drive will eventually die someday too.

At the end of the day, if the number of cycles is what you’re most worried about concerning SSD’s, that tells me you have a lot of learning yet to do. They’re not even considered “new” technology at this point. Besides, I’ve had to replace my disc-based drive 2 times since I bought my notebook. The SSD drive has worked 10 times better and has been 10 times more reliable.

Interesting information Sko, I’m encouraged by it. Do you know of any articles written by those “in the know” who have done some testing of these drives as to their reliability? It’s time I started looking seriously into this. I’m very excited about the speed of these drives. I believe the cost will come down pretty quickly.

I just installed two 128GB Crucial C300 SSD drives in my Alienware M17x in a RAID 0 configuration. I was worried about not having the Windows 7 trim support with the RAID array, so I bought the Diskeeper 2010 Pro Premium with Hyperfast, and I will let you guys know what I think after I have used it for a while. Right now, this thing is so fast. WEI for the hard disk is 7.9.

Thanks Jay. I look forward to your report.

Hey Jay could you please send me your lisence to my email? I would also like to test it out on my new Intel x25m 80G.
