One Of The Best Freeware Sites – What Site Do You Suggest? Let Us Know

Posted by on Apr 29, 2010 | 28 Comments

I sometimes forget that there are people in my life that do not know where to find stuff on the Internet — at least not the sites that I personally use. So when I received an email from a friend of mine in Idaho, it jogged my memory that everything is not as easy to find on the Internet for some as it is for others who are tech savvy. So I suggested Gizmo’s Freeware since my friend was looking for some free tools to tune her system.

I have been using Gizmo’s Freeware site for many years. Gizmo’s also provides reviews of the products it recommends and an explanation of why it selects one product over another. The site is very comprehensive in what it offers, and you can’t beat the price. It is all free.

What site do you recommend to your friends and family for their freeware needs?

Comments welcome.

    Same here Ron, Gizmo’s.
Great site, my “go to” site for software. The reviews are excellent, and most importantly, accurate.

It’s a huge site but in spite of that, I’ve found no dead links. Well maintained.

    Highly recommended. Here’s the link:

With FOSS, there is less in the way of general freeware of the type I used in the days of DOS and early Windows. Also, there is less need as the operating systems supply more and more of the basic functionality that used to have to be supplemented.

But when I do look around, it’s at Freeware Genius. Great stuff always.

There also used to be a great place called xtort.net, but unfortunately, it’s gone now – in case the person that owned it reads this, I used, and appreciated the site for many years.

Can’t believe you do not go straight to Majorgeeks at http://majorgeeks.com/ for the easiest search listing of free and shareware. Most of the download mirrors are trusted sites like Cnet and tucows.
Just remember not to click any of the “Recommended downloads” ad buttons. Only click the download locations mirrors with the animated chevrons next to them.

Thanks for the reminder, I do use Majorgeeks as well.

    Hi Ron,
MySharedFiles is something I started many years ago.
    http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/
It contains FreeWare – FunWare – and Tips
If I ever get the time, one day it might even be organized. :)

*heh* When I real the email blurb from Pirillo’s “Reviews, News and Howto Geeks” e-letter, my first thought was Gizmo’s site as well. That said, Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net) is another good site, although it does take a bit more computer knowledge to choose–and sometimes to use and even to just install–useful software.

To “the oracle” — there is a link in the upper righthand corner of http://xtort.net/freeware labelled “looking for freeware archive?” which takes you to http://xtort.net/freeware/ . No indication of how old an archive it is, and I haven’t checked any of the links.

Sorry — obviously my first link should have been simply http://xtort.net .

The problems with getting free software off the Internet is that you don’t know what else you’re getting with it. All too often free software comes bundled with stuff you may not want in your PC. One of the most notorious culprits comes from a company that offers the free Hotbar and Cursor Mania, which is nearly impossible to remove from your PC. Incredimail used to be another one, but they have cleaned up their act a bit. Nevertheless, I still wouldn’t have their software in my PC. ALWAYS read the the Website’s contract (EULA), before downloading and stalling anything. The life you save may be the life of your computer.

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ Interesting concept in free programs. :o ) They give away free, fully functioning programs. Catch is, you have just 24 hrs. to download & install the program on your computer. Occasionally they have games on the weekends, as well.

Some of the programs are useful, and some are garbage, but you get that anywhere. LOL! Just depends on the day.

Oh — I also wait a little while after the programs kick over to see what the reviews are from others. Good indication of the usefulness/fuctionality of the program of the day.

There’s scads of people wanting you to download “free” software these days. I’m way past cautious, but I have no problem finding all the freewares I want. It begins with trust.

    http://www.freewareareana.com

This venerable site is the birthplace of the Freeware Revolution and an early proponent of the idea that freeware should indeed be free, and free of any spywares. Personal issues and a good hacking all but crippled the site for several years, but it has remained up. Local downloads are limited but functional.

Point is, the links from this site, and the sites they refer you to are more trustworthy than any WOT rating. Bookmark them as you find them and you’ll have a better freeware reference than a Google search! All from dependable sources.

The easiest site even thought the list of titles is short would be ninite.com. All you do is pick the titles you want and the site generates an installer for you to download. It uses the mostly “silent” installs and opts out of all the usual “toolbars” and the like. I have found no embedded malware for any of the titles. Give it a try.

FileHippo seems to be responsible and they give the hash to check on whether the download went as planned. They also have an update checker that runs locally to see if your software is up-to-date – for the major stuff like Skype, CCleaner, VLC, Java, etc. It’s turned out to be quite useful in keeping multiple computers up to snuff.

How come nobody has mentioned Snapfiles yet? This is by far the most trustworthy download site out there, and they do have a separate freeware section.
