Police Investigate Lost Apple iPhone Prototype – The Plot Thickens!

Posted by on Apr 23, 2010 | 5 Comments

Just when we thought the case of the missing iPhone was over, now there is going to be a police investigation of the incident. California law provides the following statues:

Any person who finds lost property and knows who the owner is likely to be but “appropriates such property to his own use” is guilty of theft. If the value of the property exceeds $400, more serious charges of grand theft can be filed. In addition, a second state law says that any person who knowingly receives property that has been obtained illegally can be imprisoned for up to one year.

On the flip side we have freedom of the press.

So which police agency is getting involved?

The computer crime task force is called REACT, which stands for Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team, and was established in 1997 with a goal of working closely with Bay Area technology companies.

What? Doesn’t Steve has his own group of hired thugs? LOL

Comments welcome.

Gizmodo has already sent the new iPhone in already to it’s original owner, and yet they have to do this?

It is getting worse. The task force served a search warrant and confiscated computers.

So both the drunk guy next to the Apple employee and the people at Gizmodo that made the deal with the guy could be in trouble here. For God’s sake, it’s a freaking iPhone, the guy tried figuring out who it belonged to, Gizmodo bribed him so they could release information to the public, and Apple is complaining. Don’t get me wrong, I love Apple, and I own too many of their products. But they need to just stay silent on this one.
