Is Using The Internet A Fundamental Right? You Decide.

Posted by on Mar 8, 2010 | 5 Comments

Surfing the Internet for most of us is just a daily activity that we accept as a daily ritual. We pay an ISP for access and don’t think too much about it. But in a recent survey taken by the BBC shows that of the 27,000 Internet users who responded, a whopping 78% + felt that access to the Internet was a right. In fact Finland and Estonia have ruled that Internet access is a right for their citizens.

These statements says it all:

“The right to communicate cannot be ignored,” Dr Hamadoun Toure, secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), told BBC News.

“The internet is the most powerful potential source of enlightenment ever created.”

He said that governments must “regard the internet as basic infrastructure – just like roads, waste and water”.

“We have entered the knowledge society and everyone must have access to participate.”

It seems that Europe is moving quickly to make the Internet a right and a necessity. As usual the U.S. will lag behind because our government doesn’t have the time nor the money to enter into the 21 century. LOL

So here is a question for you. Do you believe that Internet access should be a right and why?

Comments welcome.

As with most complex questions the answer is Yes and No.
Starting the NO: Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. There are your rights. Oh yeah, that pesky Bill of Rights too! There is no amendment for the Internet. Then again there isn’t one for cell phones, Cable TV or toothpaste either.
Now to YES: Either cut off the whole planet from the internet, or allow it universally, but Don’t Discriminate against any group or individual. The society we live in is our reality. It’s never going to be the year 1905 again. We use the internet to earn a living, keep an informed electorate, preach our gospel, teach our children, buy, sell, bank, invest, etc. These are all key parts of our being able to maintain ourselves in this society. Notice that Social Networking isn’t necessary any more that online games are. However, recreation is important and once again the Internet is used by many for that purpose.
So…. A fundamental right? Like breathing and eating? No. Or a fundamental right like living and maintaining a society? Yes!
(Sorry basement dwellers, porn isn’t a factor at all)
