Counterfeits Of The Intel Core i7-920 Processor Being Shipped

Over the weekend it came to light that one of the major retailers on the Internet accidentally shipped counterfeit Intel Core i7-920 processors to customers. Some Web sites are claiming that the retailer, Newegg, may have knowingly sent out the processors, but I for one totally disagree with that assumption. I have been a Newegg customer for years and have had no issues with any products I have received from the company. All of what I have ordered has been exactly as advertised. This has included every type of component that is used in a desktop PC plus a GPS unit I ordered during the holiday season.

Intel has joined in the investigation as to what exactly happened and how these counterfeits made their way into the supply chain. One article stated that:

“Intel has been made aware of the potential for counterfeit i7-920 packages in the marketplace and is working to identify how many and/or where they are being sold,” said Nick Jacobs, an Intel spokesman, in an e-mail. “The examples we have seen are not Intel products but are counterfeits.”

“Buyers should contact their place of purchase for a replacement and/or should contact their local law enforcement agency if the place of purchase refuses to help,” he wrote.

Hopefully in the coming weeks Intel will be able to locate where these fake chips are coming from and how they could have entered into the retail system. It is also going to be interesting to see if other retailers received any of the fake chips or if Newegg was the only victim of fraud.
