How To Play ‘God’ With Windows 7 – But Be careful

Posted by on Jan 5, 2010 | 8 Comments

Over at CNET, Ina Fried has posted a very interesting piece on how to enable ‘GodMode’ for users of Windows 7. The article also states that this trick should work with Vista, but Vista users are being warned that those running the 64 bit version should be very cautious. So what does this mean to all of us?

The basics are that by employing this trick you can have complete control over Windows 7. The trick adds another separate control panel icon with additional features that I am sure Microsoft didn’t want folks to play with.

Here is how the trick works:

To enter “GodMode,” one need only create a new folder and then rename the folder to the following:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} Once that is done, the folder’s icon will change to resemble a control panel and will contain dozens of control options. I’m not sure it’s my idea of playing God, but it is a handy way to get to all kinds of controls.

I’ve asked Microsoft for more details on the feature and how it came to be. But so far, Redmond is silent on the topic.

Does it work? Yes it does. I have tried it on my personal system and it worked perfectly. But please use caution when trying this trick. You could make changes that you could regret later. I might add that a good practice would be to write down the changes you make in order to reverse them if something happens later on.

I’ll be playing with this feature and will report back later and what I find. If you decide to try this as well, please let us know your results.

Enjoy – comments welcome.

Oh maaan, I’ve sworn I’d never switch from XP, and now you tell me this! SHIT! You’ve got my attention Ron. Keep us posted for any signs of problems. Being at MS’s mercy has always been my biggest OS gripe. Now you’re telling me I can have complete control, more or less, of my own PC. If I’m this intrigued, just imagine how excited all the ‘control freak’ type chics out there will be? How about some sceenshots and examples of your marvelous discovery?

hehe you don’t have to type in GodMode, thats just some file name, you can enter what you like.

I heard its some shell folder you can access a few different ways. left over from beta which enables you to look at all settings in ctrl panel in one go :P .

Latro – thanks for the information.

Buffet – sorry guy. This is just a way to access all changes from control panel in one file. It is not at all what I thought it would be.

However, if and when you make the switch over to Windows 7 you can use this to locate options that are totally different from where they were located in XP. You can also find stuff that you may not have even known was available.

This does make finding things easier, but not like what I would think a GODMODE would be. :-(

    Hi Bobzilla,
Tried that. It is just a short cut to Control Panel.
    Regards, Ron

Useful, but a so-called “godmode”? Nowhere close.
