Amazon Kindle – Which Is Better, Original or DX And Why?

Posted by on Dec 28, 2009 | 4 Comments

This past Christmas I took a serious look at the Kindle and was unable to decide if we really needed one. Both my wife and I are avid readers and enjoy a good novel. Our library of books takes up quite a bit of book case space including some books being stacked in the guest bedroom. Because of this clutter, my wife and I discussed getting a Kindle.

I went to Amazons website and read some of the reviews. Both of the two available Kindles received very high marks from users and the reviews were glowing. The difference between the two available models, original and DX, come down to screen size and also price. The newer DX is about $200 more than the original.

For those who own a Kindle, would you kindly share your thoughts, the good, bad or ugly. Or any combination of the three. :-)

Comments please.

I have both kindle models and use them both. If you are going with one model, I’d get the Kindle 2 with 6″ screen, since it’s lighter and smaller for on-the-go reading.

You and your wife will each need your own device, though. If you share an Amazon account, you can share books. But you don’t want to share one reader.

    M.Lewis,
Thank you for the information. That is great advice about getting two Kindle, one for each of us.

I have both Kindles and I agree that for reading books, you will enjoy the Kindle 2 with the 6″ screen. It is much easier to handle; the DX is a little heavy to hold for relaxing reading. If you are likely to read newspapers or documentation (pdf files, usually), the DX is great. I also agree that you will want two readers and, with one account, you will be able to share books. Remember, you can also read Kindle books on your PC and iPhone (and iPod touch, I would imagine)…in case you just wanted to buy one Kindle reader. But each of you will want your own. It is great to have access to a bunch of books at once.

    PJ Williams,
Thanks for the info. Two Kindles it is.
I’ll be placing the order after the New Year.
