Should Cell Phones Carry A Cancer Warning?

Posted by on Dec 21, 2009 | 9 Comments

For the past few years we have all heard the reports about how cell phone use could cause brain cancer. The battle and debate frustrated some users who were not sure who to believe. On one hand we have the studies that claim harm from cell phones that could cause brain caner and on the other side the cell phone industry that claims the phones are safe.

Now we have a new situation to deal with. It seems that one state legislator in Maine actually wants a warning on cell phones. Not to be out done, the Mayor of San Francisco wants his city to be the first to require the warnings. In one article it also states the following information:

The Federal Communications Commission, which maintains that all cell phones sold in the U.S. are safe, has set a standard for the “specific absorption rate” of radio frequency energy, but it doesn’t require handset makers to divulge radiation levels.

“Although research has not consistently demonstrated a link between cellular telephone use and cancer, scientists still caution that further surveillance is needed before conclusions can be drawn,” according to the Cancer Institute’s Web site.

It seems to me that until there is concrete proof that the phones actually do in fact cause brain cancer, why even bother.

So let me ask you. Do our cell phones need this warning or is it just a waste of time?

Comments welcome.

A warning label? Would that be implying that there is a clear link between cell usage and cancer?

Sure. That’ll happen. How many class action lawsuits would pop up in the wake of that announcement? Even people who can’t afford to EAT have cell phones.

You want another Wall Street crash?

I’ll ask with some questions (I know this can suck sometimes).

Why don’t we start eating something than maybe can cause death?

Do we should wait for real proof?

Isn’t the cell-phone companies willing to spent a lot for this to be delayed as possible? (watch for the cigs vs e-cigs battle).

Why can’t we have the proof of safety before using something that may harm health?.

I mean, if I release a new medication and it’s not approved before the distribution process I’ll be putted into courts right away (even in jail). But when someone with a lot of power and money release something that might be/not dangerous for our health then we can wait.

I think one of the worst habits of the so-called “modern” society is that we wait for cure before to prevent.

Just ask yourself a last question. Will you risk your own life to be a proof that cell phones may not cause brain cancer?. Well, if you use one, you are already a testing guinea pig.

I’m positive they’ll be damn near as effective as the warnings on cigarettes.

Isn’t it wonderful that all of the world’s ills have been cured so now politicians are free to propose meaningless legislation?

If i’m not mistaken, there was a study showed that the cell phone will not cause cancer. You may try to find out this from this article http://thenextweb.com/2009/12/04/cellphone-cancer-shocked/.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts. I agree. There needs to be a definite link between cell use and brain cancer before a warning label should be applied.

I don’t believe that is has been 100% proven as of yet.

Let me direct you to the September/October issue of “Skeptical Inquirer.” On page 32 begins an article titled, “Power Line Panic and Mobile Mania” by Dr. S.T. Lakshmikumar who is scientist a National Physical Laboratory in India. He summarized much of the research and allays fears about the power line/cell phone scare.

In my opinion, Labels are usually ignored. and 90% of any label that is on anything, comes with small very fine print so, people will just rip it off and let their eyes glow at their new product.

A label won’t do jack but, put it on the local news for 5 minutes and i’m sure it will get some people’s attention.

If someone wanted to buy something in the first place, i’m sure a label won’t change their mind.

    Hi all,
IMHO, I believe that when you look at cigarettes that there was proof 40 years ago that they caused cancer. Everyone covered it up. I do not believe that we have the same proof yet for mobile phones.

I believe as someone else mentioned that currently their is no direct link between cell phones and brain cancer.
