Microsoft has posted a fix for the RMS bug I had written about last week. Here are the links for the fix:

Cannot Open Office 2003 Documents Protected with RMS – Update

The issue of the inability to open Office 2003 documents protected with RMS has now been resolved with a hotfix. You can obtain the hotfix by using the following locations.

Office Client – KB978551

Word Viewer – KB978558

Excel Viewer – KB978557

I hope this helps those who are having this issue.

Comment welcome.

So this “RMS” makes Microsoft Office formats entirely unreadable in their own office software sometimes, and always unreadable in competing software like iWork and OpenOffice.org.

Why would anyone try to archive data in a format that nobody but Microsoft truly understands?

Even OOXML isn’t really supported in Office 2007 (or 2010) as defined in the own ECMA and ISO “standards” they bought. This means that documents saved in OOXML with MS Office may not even be readable later.

ODF on the other hand is finalized, fully supported, and fully documented.

This RMS crap should only serve as a warning to people who may need to open their documents five years from now that Microsoft Office is a liability and a gamble.
