Is Google Going To Reinvent The Netbook Or Just Improve On The User Experience?

Google has some very specific visions on what a Netbook should be and how their new operating system will change how the current crop of Netbooks will change. In a screen shot of their new Chromium operating system, they have three must have features, that the new operating system will have. These are speed, simplicity and security.

Google is also going to insist that manufacturers that wish to produce a Netbook running the Google operating will have to adhere to specific guidelines from Google. As an example, Google wants their OS running on flash memory based solid state drives [SSD]. These types of drives run faster and are more power efficient. Conventional magnetic platter drives need not apply.

Google seems to be taking a page from Apple. Google does not want their operating system and pint sized, cheap Netbooks with tiny keyboards. If you have seen the Asus Eee PC with the 10.1 screen, this would seem to be the smallest Netbook Google may choose to have their operating system installed on. Just a guess on part.

What do you think? What is your vision for a Google PC? Is Google going to reinvent the Netbook or just improve upon it?

Comments welcome.

An interesting concept Ron. Pc manufacturers might do well to heed these specs, as it makes sense, BUT it might also set a precedent by having a software company dictate how a manufacturer does things, or does it? Hmmm, yeah, there’s this company in Redwood that’s been more or less doing it for years! LOL

Have a great Thanksgiving and hope the bird doesn’t bite ya !!

Hi Don,
You have a great Turkey day as well.

I already do 99% of my work through the Internet and my web browser (Chrome). Why? Because I’m not tied down to a single computer or OS. You ask, “Is Google reinventing the Netbook?” No, Google is reinventing the way we do work on the computer and the end result will be the Chrome OS. Just so happens I’ve been using this “cloud” concept for a couple of years.

Let me be clear, this is not going to change over night. However, I do believe that the old desktop OS as we know it to day will simply vanish in the “cloud”.

Hello Bobzilla,
Great points. I am also going to the cloud. :-)
Regards, Ron

I honestly hope on a level this product fails.
I can not stand google’s monopoly over the web.
This product will fail as web apps are nearly useless.
Current netbooks are fast enough and overall the common user should stick with it, this product will not be a pleasant experience for them if they have to be online to type a simple document. Google believes that the web is the way to go, it is not . There are things you can’t do over the internet without INSTALLED programs to provide these features. This takes most of the functionality out of the OS

What Do You Think?
