MS Office 2010 Beta – Refusal To Install After Using MS Office 2010 Technical Preview
I took me three days to find the answer to this problem so I hope that it helps someone else. If you previously used Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview and attempted to install Microsoft Office 2010 beta, you may have been facing an unhelpful warning, after installing the Technical Preview. The warning states:
Setup is unable to proceed due to the following error(s):
Microsoft Officie 2010 does not support upgrading from a pre release version of Microsoft Office 2010. You must first uninstall any pre release versions of Microsoft Office 2010 products and associated technologies.
Correct the issue(s) listed above and re-run setup.
What was cryptic about the message was that it didn’t state what the ‘associated technologies’ were.
I soon learned that the ‘associated technology’ was to uninstall Outlook Connector.

thanks very much for the info, i had exactly the same error and when reading through the posts on other websites, they talked about deleting files manually, adjusting the register, etc.
And then i saw your post, so i uninstalled the Outlook Connector and hey presto, it worked.
thanks for the help – much appreciated.
m.
PS Microsoft really should have something about this on their website.

Hello martino,
Agree. MS should have posted this simple solution.

Hey, what if I don’t even use Outlook and don’t have Outlook connector installed? It still shows the same error on mine. Should I now first install Connector and uninstall it to get it to work?

Jason,
Curious – what version of Windows are you using?

Hello everybody,
On the Microsoft TechNet forum
Remove
Outlook Connector
Send A Smile
If none of these work, use Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
I haven’t used this tool so be careful. I would backup my stuff first.
“When you are working on your computer and installing a new program, the installation suddenly fails. Now you are left with a partly installed program. You try to install the program again, but you are unsuccessful. Or, maybe you have problems trying to remove an old program because the installation files are corrupted.
Do not worry. Windows Installer CleanUp Utility might be able to help. You can use the utility to remove installation information for programs that were installed by using Windows Installer. Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over. “

Hello again,
This is another recommendation to try.
During the install choose Custom and only install Excel.
Go back later and install Office itself.
Some claim this worked for them.

download the windows cleanup utility . It does not matter if the title says its for older versions. Select appropriate MS office and other apps to be removed from the system
