Firstly, his name is Rupert.

Secondly, he probably realised that print media (ie physical newspapers) were a thing of the past around the time he bought myspace.

In my opinion once an organization throws up a paywall it will seal its fate as a footnote in history. The Wall Street Journal is one of the few that can get away with it because nothing else in print has the quality and depth of articles quite like the WSJ. The New York Times, which I personally think is one of the finest newspapers in the world, had to back off its paywall and go to a free model in order to make money off advertising - it sure wasn't getting it from subscribers (I have read rumors of it going back to a subscription model - lessons unlearned, I guess).

Information wants to be free. Sure, content goes a long way, but most people, I think, just want to get their news fix and get on with their day. I believe there will always be somebody out there ready to take a chance on an advertising model of news and informative article content to try and undercut the paywall sites.
