Big corporations and die hard consumers are still holding on to XP because it is a solid operating system and compatibility was never an issue for a long time. Windows 7 is a great OS and when Microsoft works out the bugs, and software/hardware companies work out compatibility issues, then I think migrating to 7 will be less of an issue.

As James said, it took a while for XP to become a stable/reliable choice for 98/ME/2000 users to migrate to. The same will be true for 7, but I think that Vista will soon lie in silent on the recovery partitions of those who have upgraded to 7 and forgoten in 2 years.

Vista was a hoax anyways http://www.bbspot.com/News/2009/01/ballmer-vista-joke.html

I'll stick with XP, why spend more money when XP is a great operating system, if I upgrade to anything, it will be to Ubuntu, I'm testing it out now and if I can run all my windows programs on it with no problem, then I will use Ubuntu since it's free.

It took Microsoft years got get XP all stable and good. It is hard to lose. I dual boot it for hardware not supported by Vista/7. It also is being done in Virtual Machine on Virtualbox whenever they get their bugs on 7 ironed out.

Comparing operating systems with all their attributes and different facets it would be hard to come to a conclusion which is number one. In the case of xp versus windows 7, I may say with many critics knocking on my door that xp is old but a goodie, and windows 7 is new and still has potential as time progresses for improvement.
