Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2- Use The Game and Return It For A Refund – Will This Work?
GameStop is offering gamers an unusual offer that could get you Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for as little as $20. On their web site they states that if you pre-order the game, for either the Xbox 360 or PS3 and pay full retail of $60, you can get a $40 refund when you return the game to a participating GameSpot retailer.
The offer is as follows:
Pre-order Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 online and get a guaranteed $40 trade credit if you trade in the game at a GameStop store by December 13, 2009. Offer valid for online purchases only. Offer valid for a limited time only and will be extended to all existing pre-orders. GameStop reserves the right to end this promotion at any time. Coupon for $40 trade credit will be e-mailed November 16, 2009 to the e-mail address used to place the order. Xbox 360 and PS3 versions only.
Pre-order Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 by November the 9th at 11am CST with overnight shipping and get guaranteed delivery on the street date of November the 10th! If your product does not arrive on the street date, we will fully refund your shipping charge. Continental United States only. Must have Overnight Service available in your area. Offer void if you are unable to accept a delivery that was attempted. Not responsible for orders delayed due to inclement weather, incorrect address, credit card information or war dogs chasing the mailman.
This is an interesting approach and it should be interesting to see if it works. Question for you gamers. Would you take advantage of such a program if you were guaranteed a refund?
Comments welcome.

Sidenote: Shouldn’t the title be Call of duty 4 Modern Warfare 2? (I thought it was about the first modern warfare game but that could be me.)
Ontopic:
Even if I were eligible for the offer I wouldn’t take it. Think about it, they’re trying to make 20$ in return of which you get to play the game for a while and then they can resell the game secondhand. And you’d be 20$ down and have no game.
It’d only work if modern warfare 2 had no replay value which I think it has.

This is an interesting idea that might encourage gamers to use the trade in services from gamestop. We would need to follow the price for a used copy of this game in ebay to know if the deal is worth it. Regardless, this might be something that could boost initial sales, but hurt publishers in the long run as there could be a flood of used trades in the market.
On a different note… console makers have to hurry up and offer even bigger hard-disks for their systems. At the end, we would all benefit from a larger digital distribution system. Publishers could lower the price of new titles to the $40-50 range because there would be lower distribution costs and a larger long-run market since there would less second-hand games out in the market. Besides, this would be awesome for all of us who like to keep a copy of the game we buy – if it is digital (and assuming that it is attached to your account and that you would be able to re-download it in the future) it is your forever, no disks to get scratched, lost or stolen.

Hello Adriano,
I believe it is an interesting idea as well. It makes one wonder whether other software developers will follow this lead.
