- Which Group Of Windows Users Are Switching To Windows 7? Those Who Are Using Vista
As the world wide recession lingers on and more people struggle to make ends meet, more people are hanging on to their older computer systems. We are all aware that businesses failed to embrace Windows Vista and continue to use the reliable, though aging, Windows XP. But no matter how many consumers or businesses try to hang on to XP, there will be a time when they will have to upgrade. When these consumers and businesses do, Windows 7 will be waiting to fill the need.
No matter which company you like or dislike, whether it be Apple, Linux or Windows, there are some facts that are indisputable. Apple might be classy and Snow Leopard may be a sweet OS, with Linux being the open source holy grail, but it is Windows that supports the tech. industry. Ask Intel, AMD. Seagate, Asus, Toshiba, Dell, Acer, Gateway, Lenovo, NVidia, ATI and hundreds of other hardware and software makers who rely on Windows to support their company. If they had to rely on Apple and Linux alone they would be closing shop.
Microsoft only has to sit back this time around. Just sit back and wait for those aging computers to begin to fail and get replaced. Just wait until those who are using Windows XP to start to drop off like flies and make the switch. It has happened before and it will happen again. How many people in the world are still using Windows 98. Think back people. 1998 wasn’t that long ago.
Each day that I use Windows 7 as my primary operating system, the more I enjoy it. I believe I have an advantage since I upgraded from Vista and was familiar with the way Vista worked. For the most part W7 works the same way and the switch was simple to make. For those who are still using Windows XP you will find the change over somewhat harder. But you will eventually make the switch and will be glad you did.
So what am I finding that is making me a Windows 7 convert?
First there is the speed of W7. It is quick. Quick to boot, quick to shutdown and quick to go into hibernation mode. All of the installed programs on my laptop are responding faster.
W7 uses less memory. Vista was a memory hog at times. Though I am not using anything very scientific to test the memory usage of W7, I can pass on what a gadget I have shows. The gadget I have displays the core usage of my dual cpu, memory in percentage being used and wireless connection signal. Since this is the same laptop that originally came with Vista and that was upgrade to W7, hardware or software changes were minimal. When running Vista the memory usage would creep up to 55% on a average day. That number has dropped down to below 40%.
The new taskbar is great. I didn’t realize how much of a difference this would make in my daily activities. Bottom line is that I really like this new feature.
Some reviews have labeled W7 as ‘7ista’ and rightfully so. To be absolutely candid it is an improved Vista. It is exactly what Microsoft needed to do and may just bury the Vista complainers once and for all.
I read somewhere that it seemed to one reviewer that Microsoft has concentrated on making W7 more friendly to upgrading for laptop users. I am not sure how accurate this statement is. But I know that my laptop is running great after the upgrade to W7 and so is the new laptop I bought for my wife which also runs W7.
Just my two cents.
Comments welcome.

“If they had to rely on Apple and Linux alone they would be closing shop.”
Why would you say that? If there were no windows, then these OS’s (and others that might have survived, had MS chose to obey the law) would (actually do) provide the same business opportunity that windows does.
While it’s true that the poor design of windows provides some opportunities that might not be around (like ant-virus and various fixer products) the money could have been well spent elsewhere on other products.

this is a capitalist economy, I don’t think that microsoft has done anything differently than any other software companies or lets compare microsoft to walmart.
people claim that microsoft is forcing computer companies to use the windows program, well if you were a computer company which operating system would you want on your computer one that you know more people will buy or one that will be priced so high that the average person can’t afford. and as for linux i have tried it and i personally don’t like it. lets look at the virus aspect the reason windows has so many virus’s is because people who make them want them to infect the most computers possible. well since pc’s are cheaper to buy there are more and of course those virus are going to be made for the pc. now lets look at apples advertising, when is the last time you seen a mac commercial that wasn’t basically putting down the pc, “Hi I’m a Mac, and I’m a PC.” well windows 7 has finaly become what vista should have been. I have not had a computer that has run this good in years, but at the same time i didn’t have any problems with vista it’s just that windows 7 is so much faster and less of a memory hog.
as for the comparison to wal-mart, they are out to make a dollor just like microsoft. and what did they do to make that dollor. they shut down main street, we asked for lower prices, what did they do, they forced their suppliers to move companies over seas to china where labor is pennies on the dollor, and the products are also cheaper quality. that is why if you look at a tv at walmart and the same model well you can’t say that because 1 number will be different but they are the same model one is made in china and the other is made somewhere else, and little better quality.
so walmart and microsoft listened to the people and what they wanted and supplied these things to the population. but you have to admit that with the new windows 7 doing the beta’s and having a larger group of people work out the bugs is a great credit to microsoft, instead of using a few hundred people they had input from thousands and thousands of people. ok i’m ranting, but people need to stop listening to the mac commercials and accualy try the product. if mac even came close to windows market share i asure you that you would hear more complaints and there would be alot more virus’s for the mac.

I totally agree with you. My laptop came with Vista on it and honestly, I loved Vista and still do. Once the open beta of W7 was released I immediately picked it up. From there I went to the RC and now I have the official version of W7. I love it and could not be happier. All five of my computers are running much faster and more smoothly now. Your article hit the nail on head. Good job.

I went working with Win98 until i no longer found a CD to install it, i kept using it well into 2005 , then, went to win2k, and afther that, the winXP route…I expect it to last a lot longer in my computers than win98 did on my old ones. BUT, whenever i feel forced to change, i’ll probably switch to Linux because i tend to work more than I play, and probably all my electronics design programs will still work.

The whole fact of their being a flaw in the networking drivers that makes it possible to blue screen a computer remotely kinda makes me not keen on buying it, course I fail to see what it will introduce that will actually be of any benefit, of course the only reason I stopped using 98 SE was because the antivirus companies stopped supporting it.

Vista was WinME, all over again…An unfinished, unpolished OS released to the masses to find the bugs- that info used to fine-tune 7.
Best thing to do with MS, if you wish to use it, is to leapfrog & install every other version.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about W7. What I can’t understand is why I can pick up an Acer Aspire Laptop with W7 Home Premium installed from MicroCenter for $350 (on sale), but the OS alone is (W7 Home Premium) is $200!
There’s definitely something out of kilter when a great OS like Ubuntu, Linux Mint or PCLOS can be had for free of charge or a small donation, but M$ insists on charging so much for their product. With their market share and volume of sales, one would think that the price of the OS alone would be more reasonable.
I’m not trying to be a tight-wad here, I just don’t understand the math.

I agree with you. I just bought a emachine with windows 7.. I absolutely love it. It’s quick, stable, everything just seems to work well and it has real nice features. I was really blown away at how good it is as well as my new emachine with 6 gig of ram..

I agree, win7 is leaner, faster, better. I used vista since it came out, it was more stable than XP. But 7 IS better.
Some quircks: I used in xp and vista a lot of toolbars, the toolbars that you could pin to the sides of your screen, the top, etc.
7 does not have those, i miss them. 7 does not have classic start menu. CSM is/was much faster and much easier to use.
The ideal?: 7 taskbar + pinnable/unpinable toolbars + CSM!!!

I agree. Give us back the classic start menu and classic folders and give us an easy way to disable/uninstall all the eye candy. I don’t use my computer for photos and music and it seems that 7 is geared toward that with the libraries, etc. The OS seems stable, but the interface sucks and Aero, to me, is useless. Give me my rainy day theme anytime. Thankfully, I think 3rd party vendors will answer the call.

I likw Windows 7 too, but my main problem with it is the file system / windows explorer. If you notice when ever you use it, favourites and homegroup etc always stay at the top, so everything else gets pushed down the screen this can be very annoying when file browsing.
The main reason for this seems t o be so that people don’t get “lost” in the “filesystem”, but for people (tech users etc) who are experienced this can be frustrating.
I really hope they fix this, or allow for turning off showing favourites, homegroup and libraries always at the top.
