Steve Ballmer: ‘Microsoft Never Recovered From Vista Blow’

In what I can only describe as a surprising statement, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has actually admitted that Vista was less than a stellar operating system. In a recent statement Mr. Ballmer said:

The company’s reputation took a beating after the release of Vista, which caused machines to stall indefinitely while deleting, copying and moving files, among many other issues.

Mr Ballmer said: “We got some uneven reception when [Vista] first launched in large part because we made some design decisions to improve security at the expense of compatibility. I don’t think from a word-of-mouth perspective we ever recovered from that.”

In a tacit acceptance that Vista did not sell well, he says there is “pent up demand” for new equipment.

“I’d be hopeful that we see a bit more rapid pick-up - particularly people who are upgrading the software without touching the hardware - than maybe we have in years past.”

If this is the case one could conclude that Microsoft owes Vista users a discounted upgrade to Windows 7. At least this is how I personally feel. What about you? Share your opinion.

If you were a college student like myself you would get a nice discount.

I’d say they owe a free–not discounted–replacement. They admit the system is faulty. If I got a faulty couch I’d expect a replacement.

I do hope that Windows 7 is better than Vista. And if you look at the beta and release candidates of windows 7, it sure looks very good. But will it be enough???

Hi Robert,
I have been using the RTM version of W7 and I personally believe it will be enough. For the Pro & Ultimate versions being able to run XP-Mode should entice businesses to make the switch as well.

I can’t upgrade my ram beyond the 2 gb it has. So I will not be doing windows 7.I may revert back to XP as Vista has been problematic ( slow and too much ditsy fluff) even with the addition of service pack 2 .I expect some support from Microsoft on this as their abysmal addressing to these problems is reminding me of the Apple commercials and making me go to Jason Long’s camp.

I got news for you 7 is just a service pack and Vista did not get better it the hardware that got faster and that compensate for the bad coding. The peoples at Intel even have an expression for this cycle it call the great Moore Law compensator. No matter how fast a computer is bloat end up eating it all away until they release something faster. Than Microsoft release a new “upgraded” version of that bloat to continue the cycle all over again.

What Do You Think?
