The traditional mad shopping day known as Black Friday could turn out to be one of the best ever. With the economy in the crapper, retailers could be offering super deals to entice buyers either into their brick & mortar stores or to their shops online. Yesterday I received an early email notification from Black Friday @ GottaDeal.com in which they are already gearing up for what they perceive as a busy Black Friday shopping season.
Oops, I forgot. For those outside of the U.S., Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving which is on Friday November 27th this year. Here are some of the early sale predictions for this years Black Friday celebration:
Having covered Black Friday extensively for the past six years, we are in a better position than pretty much anyone else to offer predictions for this year. Over the years we’ve noticed trends in the deals offered by the major retailers and can offer a glimpse into what we believe will be the best Black Friday deals this year, along with some general holiday shopping predictions.
On to price predictions. We fully expect to see 42″ plasma and HDTVs in the $399 to $499 range this year. These cheaper HDTVs will likely be 720p and will lack features found in more expensive models. We expect prices on 50″ plasma and LCD HDTVs to also fall this Black Friday, perhaps to somewhere around $599 to $699.
The “classic” Black Friday laptop the last few years has had a 15.4″ widescreen LCD display, a dual-core processor, 2GB of memory, 160GB hard drive and usually a combo CD-RW/DVD drive, along with standard features such as WiFi, modem and ethernet port. Laptops like these have been available all year long from retailers such as Best Buy, Dell and Staples for as low as $349. Therefore we predict we’ll see this level of laptop in Black Friday ads for around $249 to $299 this year. We’ll also predict an upgraded model with a faster Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, DVD burner and larger hard drive for $349, and maybe less.
There is this about Netbooks:
As with regular laptops, these mini machines vary greatly in specs and features. We expect to see the cheapest of these netbooks for around $99 this Black Friday, but there will be deals on models with better features. Realize that these are not meant to be your primary machine. They are great for light tasks such as web browsing and e-mail, but the small screen size and smaller keyboard make long-term use uncomfortable in most cases.
There are a lot more predictions here at Black Friday Predictions for 2009.
What is really interesting is the prediction that desperate retailers might jump the gun and start their sales in October. With Window 7 computers coming our way on or about October 22nd, 2009, I would expect that some retailers may be offering deals on these new boxes. At least this is what I am hoping since I will be in the market to replace my wife’s 3 year old laptop system.
So what do you think? Will these predictions come true?
Comments welcome.

Sad as this sounds, Black friday sales generally go down in quality when the economy slumps. It eats into the company to do them, and they won’t let it crash the store with negative money, since most BF sales lead to people just buying the sales and leaving the rest alone. Since no one will be shopping just shopping sales, Retailers are less inclined to offer great deals.

I think many consumers have been burnt by the sour economy.. whether it be job loss, cuts in pay, stagflation, whatever the reaons…
Here are my reasons why consumers won’t/can’t make retailers happy:
1. gasoline prices (where will they be 11/27/2009??)
2. credit card interest rates (bumped up 2-6% for you poor souls carrying a balance)
3. Job loss ? No black friday for you! All discretionary income cut… just affording the basics can hurt. Not every job is as secure as a Doctor, Nurse, Fireman, Policeman, or President of the United States! Many blue collar jobs are seeing pay cuts due to oversupply in so-called secure job fields such as nursing!
The sweet spot is for consumers to spend about $400-800 this holiday season.. but unless something breaks the consumer’s way, this will be a dismal season as stressed retailers push to close stores and possibly into bankruptcy (sears, officemax, blockbuster).
I also agree, as the economy does bad, the deals get worse for the consumer, however unlike in years past this WILL come back to bite the B&M retailers, particularly as deals will be sought online.. and not necessarily at the B&M’s online sites either!

I can agree with all the postings. Job lay offs, higher taxes, higher cost of living, soaring gas prices and credit card interest rates have hit us all. But everyone knows that if something is going to be on sale on Black Friday and you just have to buy it because of the savings you will buy it.
Walmart offers 12 months no apr mininum purchase of 299.00 with mininum payments monthly. You just have to read the fine print. I charge then pay off with tax returns.
I clip coupons, and i search for coupon codes when ordering online. I also shop at price chopper and get my gas at sunoco. for every $50.00 in food i earn 10 cents off per gallon. BJ’s also has their coupons combined with mine I saved 189.00 on my last trip.
Cut corners eat in front of t.v. no lights. turn down the heat two degrees. take shorter showers. do not eat out. Brown bag lunch. Bring coffee pot to work… No More Dunkin Doughnuts. Fill automobile tires up with nitro instead of air. It costs 20.00 and gained 10 more miles to the gallon. Turn your t.v. to energy saver. Buy energy saver bulbs from your electic company’s website for cheaper than local store. National Grid has rebates when you purchase bulbs and appliances that are energy savers.

I don’t know if all the stores will be having a great sale this year but I think there will be some. I can see Walmart have a sale like they did last year. Past few years before last year, Walmart’s BF sale was not all that great. It has been years since I have seen Walmart so jammed packed like last year. Given last year’s success, I think they will do it again. I do hope that this years holidays items are cheaper then last year. I was really surprised to see how expensive the candy, cookies, gift baskets, etc. were last year. I waited to buy that stuff after Christmas. I was also surprised to see how much stuff was left after Christmas as well. Usually I can nevever get any ornaments cause they are picked over after the holiday but last year I was able to get quite a few at Target. There is not alot of money for me this year so I hope I can get some good deals.

Personally, I think sales this year will be better than ever. I read over at http://www.bfreedom.com/2008/09/16/black-friday-2009-walmart-sales/ that they are planning to have more sales than in previous years. That site also covers a lot more companies, worth checking out
