Dick Tracy Would Be Proud – Wrist Phone Finally Arrives

Posted by on Aug 20, 2009 | One Comment

Dick Tracy first hit the newspapers back in the 1930s and the crime stopper has been fighting bad guys ever since. One of Dick Tracy’s gadgets he used in stopping crime was his two-way wrist radio, which alerted the crime stopping detective to the latest criminal activity. So why has it taken so long for a wrist phone to finally arrive? I don’t know the answer to this question since technology has had the ability to make the wrist phone a reality for a long time. But whatever the reasoning, it looks like LG is ready, along with a company by the name of Orange, to introduce the device in the UK

A recent article states:

It’s made by LG and Orange has the exclusive deal to sell it in the UK on a pay-as-you-go deal for a mere £500.

You can make calls just by tapping on the watch face — I found it pretty awkward — but it comes with a Bluetooth headset which does at least make it easier to receive calls.

It’s not really a smartphone — you can’t, for instance, surf the Web or navigate your way around town with it — but it does have video calling.

We tried it and I was reminded once again why this supposed “killer app” of 3G communications never took off.

You don’t really want to stare at the person you’re calling, unless you’re sitting down at the computer for a long chat with someone far away.

The trouble is, that if you’d had one of these phones in the 1980s, you might well have been the object of wonder and admiration as you dialed up Mission Control from your wrist, or spoke to Miss Moneypenny.

But I can’t help feeling that anyone seen staring at their chunky LG wristwatch as they make a call is more likely to be a figure of fun.

In short: a gimmick, not a gadget.

So what do you think? Is the world ready for a wrist phone? Would you buy one?

Comments welcome.

I think it will be a nice little device as a secondary phone for use when you don’t want to be carrying around your heavy smart phone, but mabey not as a primary device yet. In the future when new tech has been harnessed and incremented into this kind of device we might see a rise in how many companys follow the lead of LG. Well done LG for taking the first step. Also living in the UK, I’d like to say orange is an amazing mobile network company, by one get one free picture tickets on a wednesday ect!
