Yahoo CEO: ‘We Have Never Been a Search Company’

I had to scratch my head when I first read this statement from the head boss of Yahoo saying the company was not a search company. Well I believe some of us may differ from this statement for several reasons. When Yahoo first became available to the masses, everyone I know used it to do what? Search for stuff on the Internet. I also believe that if Yahoo is not a search engine than Microsoft should get a refund from Yahoo. LOL
Here is what the Yahoo CEO has stated:
Ms. Bartz places Yahoo’s position in a rather different light. “We have never been a search company,” she said. “It is, ‘I am on Yahoo. I am going to do a search.’”
It’s a subtle verbal difference but perhaps an obvious practical one to Internet users. Yahoo, according to Ms. Bartz, simply feeds search results for people who have grown curious while reading one of its news stories or watching a video. It doesn’t generally pop into peoples’ minds as the first place to go look for answers during the course of their day-to-day activities.
Interesting take on what Yahoo is. But what do you think? I personally believe that Yahoo was a search engine before the latest CEO came to the company. That is my 2 cents. What is yours?
Comments welcome.

I would have to say that no, yahoo is not a search company but rather a company that lets you search.

I believe that the current CEO is simply coming to terms with the fact that Yahoo will never be number one in search, and that it should focus elsewhere in order to remain important to people.

I am not a computer programmer. I simply “program computers.” Please don’t bother comparing my performance against those dedicated “computer programmers.” I’m not one of them.
Programming is just what I DO when I happen to sit in front of a computer at my place of employment. Its not what I AM, so it doesn’t matter if I’m not as good as those other “computer programmers.”
LOL.

Seems to me a not so smart move from Yahoo: while is loosing market as a search company, tries to rebuild image as something different.
It’s a pity that there are more credible players also in the place Ms Bartz would like to occupy.

Yahell is primarily a third party internet parasite that contracts out search hijackings with various ISPs like AT&T and more recently, Comcast.
They also have a fairly bloated and unstable messenger program laden with advertising, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much spam land in an email box before.
They’re like some third world imitation Google, no wonder Microsoft is partnering with them.

[...] Yahoo is not a search company? Ron Schenone at Lockergnome reports that Yahoo CEO Ms Bartz doesn’t consider Yahoo as a search company but a sort of evoluted news aggregator (full article at http://www.lockergnome.com/blade/2009/08/07/yahoo-ceo-%e2%80%98we-have-never-been-a-search-company%e...).
