Microsoft Windows 7 Family Pack – Is It A Deal At $150?

Posted by on Jul 31, 2009 | 15 Comments

Over at the Windows Blog today, Brandon LeBlanc confirmed the existence of the Windows 7 Family Pack. The pack will include three licenses for Windows 7 Home Premium at the retail cost of $149.99. So a family of three can get Windows 7 for about $50 a copy, which seems very reasonable.

But there is this:

The Windows 7 Family Pack will be available starting on October 22nd until supplies last here in the US and other select markets. In the US, the price for the Windows 7 Family Pack will be $149.99 for 3 Windows 7 Home Premium licenses. That’s a savings of more than $200 for three licenses. This is a great value and we’re excited to be able to offer it to customers.

Why are supplies limited? Shouldn’t this be a permanent deal for families?

I personally believe that Microsoft is making a mistake by limiting supplies. This would be a great way for the company to thank all of their loyal customers for years and years of support. It would also go a long way in healing the wounds of some Vista users who were dealt a bad hand when Vista was first released.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I could see people buying the 3 license pack for $150 and then selling off the other two licenses for $100 each.

I think I’ll switch to Linux… I payed 400$ for Vista Ultimate and I won’t ever buy an OS from M$.

They limit the supplies…well they wanna achieve something in the US/etc/ but if this will be only a promotion package then it’s kinda useless, if only some privileged people can put their hands on it.

Windows is good in some respects for the non-techie folks out there but for someone who wants to learn the internals of an OS and other kinky things then I’d rather skip it.

    Have Fun!

“Supplies limited” that’s funny. Also I wonder if the license they mentioned is the kind that only allows you to run 3 programs.

    Hi Jeff,
It is the full version – not limited.

    Mark – I agree 100%.

Price looks inviting, however I understand it’s more than complicated to get to 7 from XP-pro. Real experience says it’s always worse than expected / portrayed by the vendor. My hardware ranges from 2 yrs to 5 yrs old. If I’m looking at a serious outlay of time and money then I’m seriously evaluating the pro’s n con’s involved in replacing my stuff Apple. This from a before the dawn of micro-DOS “worker”.

If MS is serious about ridding themselves of XP, they should make this permanent. I have 3 machines at home: two running XP and one Vista. Although I actually like Vista SP1, I would love to upgrade all PCs to Win7. But, I refuse to pay for a license for each. So, if I can’t get the family pack, then some of my PCs will stay with XP.
