It is hard to believe that a crack for Windows 7 Ultimate has already been found, in view of the fact that the final RTM hasn’t even been released. But a Microsoft spokes person has confirmed to Neowin the following:
A Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed to Neowin: “we are aware of reports of activation exploits that attempt to circumvent activation & validation in Windows 7, and we can assure customers that Microsoft is committed to protecting them from counterfeit and pirated software. Microsoft strongly advises customers not to download Windows 7 from unauthorized sources. Downloading Windows 7 from peer-to-peer Web sites is piracy, and exposes users to increased risks – such as viruses, Trojans and other malware and malicious code—that usually accompany counterfeit software.”
According to the Neowin article the exploit came about from a ‘leaked Lenovo OEM DVD .ISO file’. One may recall that a leaked activation had also occurred for Windows XP. What eventually happened is that the leaked key prevented updates, fixes and patches from being applied.
So as the spokesman states, be careful out there in Windows land.
Comments welcome.

Just in case anyone was wondering, Microsoft Security Essentials *can* scan inside WIM files on a Windows setup DVD.
lalalala…..
And yeah, it’s no surprise it’s already been cracked, it’s a simple BIOS modification that takes like 5 minutes (with a authorization code that’s already leaked) + a mass OEM registration serial number (that’s already leaked), + an OEM authorization certificate whose format has not changed since Windows Vista (so this didn’t even have to leak, anyone with a OEM copy of Vista has the file)
As long as Microsoft can’t discern hardware mods from actual OEM computers, or is too afraid to shut them down for fear of nabbing millions of legit users like they do _whenever_ they clamp down, there’s not a hell of a lot they can do. It’s not like the replacement bootloaders and cracks that alter system files. If anyone uses those, they’re living on borrowed time and Microsoft can trojan in the poison pill masquerading as any Windows update.
Microsoft’s product activation is much like locking the steering wheel on your car. It may keep some punk kid from driving off with it, but it’s never going to stop a professional car thief.
Welcome to Windows 7: Gone In 60 Seconds Edition. lol
This is one reason there are so many Vista systems out there with Windows Update shut off that are not getting security patches. You can blame Microsoft’s heavy handed bullcrap for probably half the botnets out there because everyone is too afraid to install security patches for fear of being rumbled.
