Is ‘Resonant Magnetic Coupling’ Going To Change Our Lives?

The electric power cord has been with us for so long, I guess I never really gave any thought about not having one attached to our appliances. Yes, there are battery devices, but I am talking about big appliances like Refrigerators and plasma TV’s. Well that may be all changing if one company has it way, They say that within 18 months they will be able to transmit electricity through the air.

Over at the L.A. Times they have an article which describes what ‘resonant magnetic coupling; could mean:

Now a Massachusetts company, WiTricity, says it will have just such a system on the market in about 18 months. The company, which has been developing its technology based on the work of MIT physicist Marin Soljacic, made the announcement at the prestigious TEDGlobal conference that ended Friday in Oxford in the U.K.

The company showed how a transmitting unit, which could be placed in a wall, could power a television set several feet away. The chief executive of the company, Eric Giler, also showed how the system could wirelessly charge a G1 cellphone equipped with an antenna unit so small it could fit inside the phone case.

An iPhone was part of the demonstration, too, but that phone’s innards are so closely packed that the antenna had to be attached to the outside of the case.

If this really becomes a reality it would be revolutionary for all of us. No more power cords to deal with. No more wall sockets.

Don’t cross the beams!

…..no more electricians? Lotsa my friends outta work. Uncool. However - I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. Technology like this, if and when it comes to pass, is likely, in the far distant future. The lapse between the prototype stage and the ‘production model’ on most things is usually considerable. In this instance there are several other variables that must be factored in, namely adherence tosafety protocols, OSHA approval, compliance with state and local building codes, and, last but not least, union(s) approval. NOT small hurdles.

suddenly i feel safer next to the tiny black hole in the large hadron collider than i do within 1000 miles of “witricity.”

i was kind of hoping that the solution to the whole cell-phones-and-power-line-towers-causing-cancer thing wasn’t going to be something like: make those problems obsolete with superior degradation.

this should be like solving an oil spill by erupting a volcano. or maybe i just don’t “understand physics” but neither did marie curie. she’s to be thanked, but i don’t want to pay for genius the way she did, just to save myself the hassle of a few cords laying around. more importantly, is there anyone left on the planet who can give us an honest answer about whether this stuff is safe?

hopefully not from the people who thought it would be a great idea to dump nuclear waste into barrels, transport them on trailers, and dump them in the sea, please. i’m not saying i’m against cordless technology, i’m just not wild about massive tumors. i would have liked to have cured cancer, and THEN perfected wireless tech.

What Do You Think?
