Not Everyone Is Happy With Windows 7 Upgrade Prices - Especially Ultimate Users!

‘Welcome to the Windows Blog’ is the greeting one gets when they bring up Microsoft’s site. But when it comes to the pricing of Windows 7, not everyone is a happy camper. You see, Microsoft has given a significant price cut for pre-ordering Windows 7 Home and also Windows 7 Professional. Oops! What about Ultimate? Microsoft continues to step on the feelings on those who were suckered into buying Ultimate with promises of rich features to follow. Well get out the Vaseline Ultimate users because there will be no price cuts for you people.
Some folks are so happy with this arrangement, they have expressed their happiness over on the Windows blog this way:

I am VERY disappointed as others are that there isn’t a discount for ultimate during that time period. I have FOUR machines that have Vista Ultimate, so now I am going to have to pay about $880 to upgrade them to the same level in 7…
jaxim
this is ridiculous! XP and Vista owners get the SAME upgrade price?!!!!!!!!! Windows 7 is practically a service pack of Vista. It’s what Vista should have been.
Vista owners should at least get the upgrade for half price for an unlimited time. Something at least! Throw a dog a bone! This is not the way to treat your customer who bought XP, then upgraded to Vista!!!!
Microsoft, these prices are WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!!!! Take a page from Apple’s playbook! One version, One inexpensive price for everyone!
I’m a PC, and I’m mad as heck!

Was hoping Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate upgrade would get a special deal, but Ultimate is not even made available for the pre-order discounts being offered, which is disappointing.

So first we Vista Ultimate users pay a huge price for a a Vista version that is not in any way worth the money and now we have to pay a even more for an upgrade? WTF? Alteast make the ultimate _upgrade_ cost as much as the professional upgrade. Otherwise it’s like double tax!
Was looking forward to W7, not so much now
Jim,
This is a load of crap! I bought VISTA ULTIMATE 2 years ago and have fought the problems since. I have tested 7 since it came out in beta and am not getting a reduced Price as sort of an I’M SORRY from Microsoft for buying Millenium #2 in Vista Ultimate. We hardcore MS buyers (not piraters) and testers should get a big discount on 7 Ultimage! But we don’t even get early discount pricing? UBUNTU is free, and if this is truely the way MS will treat us then UBUNTU here I come!
sweatshopking
WTF AGAIN AND AGAIN. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. AS SOMEBODY WHO WAS STUPID ENOUGH TO PURCHASE WINDOWS VISTA ULTIMATE, I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW DUMB THIS IS. YOU GUYS trying TO GET ME TO GO OSX? this is insane, and you guys suck hard.
WhistlerAl
What a joke.
I have had to put up with vista ultimate for two years, with all the problems, and now I get to “upgrade” at full price???!!!! You should be giving it to me for free, plus pay for the medical bills for the ulcers the damn program has given me. You had better rethink your pricing or you will be losing a lot more customers than you already have due to the catastrophe that vista is. Oh, and do I have this right…I get to prepay before it is available. Brilliant!!!
There are more comments but you get the drift. There are some unhappy Ultimate users that have expressed their views.
What do you think? Should the pre-order pricing have included Ultimate? I think it should of.
Comments welcome.

Well, they’ve got no ultimate extras, and Windows 7 upgrade is like $219 and has essentially just become Home Premium+Business.
It’s easy to add the Business features to Home Premium, or the Home Premium features to Business with third party software (mainly freeware even), so you can usually just get the $50 promo upgrade to Home Premium and extend it to do whatever you want.
But people who already have Vista Ultimate have no upgrade path to the cheaper versions of Windows 7.
They should call it “Windows Ultimately Screwed Users Edition” with a European “W/O integrated lube” OEM version.

Microsoft screwing customers on upgrade pricing and having convoluted upgrade paths is surprising why exactly? And, yes, I was one of those gullible enough to buy Vist Ultimaste.

That exactly why I ditched Windows and got a Mac. Now, I can profit from they OS upgrade pricing and laugh at those you say : “Apple tax is not for me”.

Hello, windows 7 users. Please allow me to introduce you to such flavors of linux like ubuntu, or fedora. Not only are they absolutely free, unlike Windows 7, but there is only one version which allows you to do everything you want! No need to upgrade just for some networking issues or media!

Well, stop crying and buy a Mac. The upgrade to LSnow eopard is just $30.
Can’t understand why people is still complaining against Microsoft: There’s light after M$ and Windows whatever-version-home-businners-premum-etc-etc-etc.
If you don’t like, don’t use it. If it’s too expensive, buggy, viruz magnet, etc., just change to something better.

My personal take is that this isn’t that big of a deal…
Much of what drove people to buy Ultimate in Windows Vista is now available in Windows 7 Professional.
For instance, Professional now includes both Media Center and Remote Desktop host functionality. There’s very little reason for 99% of users to buy Ultimate.
So for people who bought Ultimate but don’t need Bitlocker or DirectAccess, they can just take advantage of the pre-order deal on Windows 7 Professional.
You’ll have to do a clean install (which moves your current installation to a Windows.old folder, and you’ll need to reinstall your apps), but you can take advantage of the great pre-order pricing. Then if you decide you do need the Ultimate features, you can do the Anytime Upgrade later on.

I broke down two years ago and got a TechNet subscription. I was lucky and subscribed while they were offering $275 as the starting subscription price (versus the normal $375), since that was in reach of the price I was willing to spend for Vista. I got Vista, XP, 2003, 2008, 7 beta and RC, Office 2003, Office 2007 and other stuff that I can’t remember that I’ve downloaded. Home Server is now available.

Why exactly would you use Bitlocker?
You can easily use Truecrypt on any version of Windows and get better encryption that’s harder to crack through.
If you insist on using Bitlocker, you should make sure that you don’t leave the USB bootup thumbdrive anywhere the police can find it, because part of Microsoft’s instructions to the police are to make sure to confiscate any USB and Compact Flash drives they find along with the computer.
True that they may figure out how to boot up the computer even without the key, so you may just want to use an encrypted USB drive, save the data directly to it, and hide it instead of trying to keep data on a hard drive safe. (impossible to do)
I use iron key which self destructs if anyone tries to physically tamper with it or guesses the password wrong three times in a row.

I am really disgusted with MicroSHAFT. I bought my wife a Sony Vaio laptop that was a really premium laptop with Vista Home Premium and was horrified how Vista turned premium hardware into a slow useless piece of crap and now they want me to pay $119 to upgrade to what it should have been from the beginning, I did not get to the pre-order price in time. Doesn’t Gates and Ballmer have enough money. What is wrong with these sicko bastards??????? Why can’t they stand behind their products. Drunk with power is the phrase that comes to mind.
No wonder people are flocking in droves to Mac and Linux, I have already made the switch to Linux and OpenOffice but can’t get the wife to switch to Linux but I may breakdown and spend the money to get her a Mac and load her Sony with Ubuntu.

Actually this makes my life much easier… I upgraded to Vista 64 Ultimate about a year ago and was dreading having to go through the whole back up, install, reconfigure, restore, install, reconfigure, restore, buy new device, install, lose a week of productivity routine with Windows 7. Now that I see how ridiculous the upgrade price for W7 Ultimate is I figure I’ll just keep my wallet closed and stick with Vista for a few more years. By that point all the apps will be in the Cloud and I won’t really need much of an OS on my desktop.

Hello George,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I believe that those who are currently running Vista without issues have no real reason to upgrade.
Vista on the laptop I use to write this blog runs great for me and I will not be upgrading. I will however be replacing another laptop for my wife which most likely will have Windows 7 installed.
Regards, Ron
