Microsoft’s Free Antivirus Software - Will You Use It?

Three years ago Microsoft entered into the anti-virus software market with their Live OneCare. Live OneCare bit the dust because, well, no one cared. The thinking back than was that Microsoft would steal away business from the likes of Symantec and McAfee. But this didn’t happen. Now Microsoft is getting ready to unveil Morro, which will be a free software product that is being touted as being basic protection to wipe out viruses and spyware on our systems.
In a recent article it states that:
Analysts said they are looking forward to Morro’s beta to see exactly how its features compare to those in products from competitors.
Microsoft has said it will provide protection from several types of malicious software including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans.
Officials with Symantec and McAfee have said they do not see Morro as a threat.
“Microsoft’s free product is basically a stripped down version of the OneCare product Microsoft pulled from the shelves,” said Symantec Consumer division president Janice Chaffin. “A full Internet security suite is what consumers require today to stay fully protected.”
Joris Evers, a spokesman for No. 2 security software maker McAfee, said his company is already enjoying strong growth despite competition from free anti-virus products that are on the market.
“On a level playing field, we are confident in our ability to compete with anyone who might enter the marketplace,” he said.
But will Microsoft’s Morro be nothing more than a stripped down version of Live OneCare? Or has Microsoft finally learned how to protect their own operating system from attack?

I installed One Care and had forsaken my precious AVG at one point as I thought I had contracted a virus that AVG couldn’t remove.
I can’t remember if it did the trick or not, but I removed it in the end and spat at the feet of Microsoft when I discovered how posessive it was over my system. I got sick of seeing a constant red One Care Emblem in the corner CONSTANTLY reminding me that I’m not protected enough because I didn’t have MS Automatic Updates set to install updates whenever it wanted.
I ended up letting Automatic Updates update my machine for a while so I could feel protected - until my machine seemed to reboot of it’s own accord with EVERY SINGLE PUNY UPDATE they had to offer. “Wow (i thought), updates installed - that REALLY makes up for the data loss and inconveniece!” - NOT!
I reinstalled AVG - never looked back. They better have something *really* impressive if they want me to try their new Anti-malware!

I’ve always found Microsoft’s products, on the whole, to be less than stellar, often with built in glitches and roadblocks. Has anyone ever actually gotten their backup utility to work? There’s no reason to expect this new offering to be anything new under the sun.
