Starting On Saturday You Can Get A Username On Facebook

Starting this Saturday morning, June 13, at 12:01am EDT, Facbook users will be asked to choose a username for their profiles. This mad rush to grab a username should cause plenty of headaches if and when the masses decide to swamp the Facebook servers. But Facebook may be up to the challenge and have stated the following:

When the landrush starts, users will be able to choose just one username for their profile and for each of the pages that they administer (they will not be available for groups or events). Usernames must be at least five characters long and can only contain letters, numbers, or periods. They will only be available in Roman characters at launch.
However, users should be careful to choose the right one: once you have made a choice, you won’t be allowed to change it or transfer it to someone else later on. Facebook isn’t allowing transfers in order to undercut the rampant squatter market that would otherwise develop – although there will still definitely be cases of abuse. Facebook says that generic words like “flowers” or “pizza” will not be available as usernames, though we’re not sure how exactly those rules will work.

So there you have it. Gather up your thoughts and select a username for your Facebook profile and head on over on Saturday.

Well I know for sure what mine will be… because I will be staying up then anyway, I will be one of the (at most) 100 people to get one. I’m sure of it. Mine is going to be the most simple one I can think of — my 5 letter name. I do indeed feel sorry for people who have 3 letter names

Stupidest idea ever. The whole point of FaceBook is to have real friends you know in person so you can keep in touch. Now they want to make a way for people to hide behind a fake persona? This is FACEBOOK! Not MYSPACE! I use FaceBook. I don’t use MySpace. Usernames are for FORUMS and BLOGS. Not social networking sites.

There had better be a way to FORCE the people to show their real names. I don’t want to learn who all my friends are again. I know “Jim Smith”. I don’t want to have to guess if he’s that guy “jsmithster1025″.

Bad move, FaceBook. BAD MOVE.
