If Windows 7 Pricing Is Higher, Will Anyone Buy It?

windows 7, microsoftRumor has it that Dell is reporting that the pricing for Windows 7 could be higher than previous versions such as Vista and XP. If true this could cause a buyers backlash for the new operating system. In a time where the economy is in the crapper, when unemployment is approaching an all time high, when …… well you get my drift.

If Microsoft believes that increasing the price of Windows 7 will help their bottom line, this type of thinking could back fire. There are a lot of folks still using XP who are happy to keep their old reliable OS working. The people who were saddled with Vista, depending on which position you take on this OS, may be gun shy when it comes to upgrading to Windows 7.

Though it is early to pre-judge Microsoft until a positive pricing policy is in place, one can only hope that pricing will be fair and take into account the current economy.

What do you think? Will you pay a higher price for Windows 7?

Comments as always are welcome.

IF you ask me, this is the worst time ever to ask for more money, they should do a discount upgrade for Vista users at the very least.

I’m thinking $50.

That’s about as much of an upgrade as I think it is over Vista.

Fat chance though, right?

I may just stay on Vista if the upgrade is too much.

Is it over 5p, sorry that’s the max I will pay for Windows.

i would definately pay more for it as long as its not too much (considering its far better then the failed vista)

It needs to be priced LOWER, similar to MAC OS X.

Firstly, basic law of economics…sell cheaper, sell more. Secondly, MS complain about piracy but then price the average consumer out of the ability to purchase legitimately. Really, with the majority of the world’s computers using MS systems surely they don’t need to increase the price beyond what was already painful to most people. Do the words credit crunch mean nothing to them? MS shd set a good example and support the small businesses by making it more affordable not less. Personally I am very impressed with it but I wd have reservations if it was substantially more.

I’ve got to say, after a couple of weeks with Windows 7 RC1 on my home/gaming computer and my Dell Latitude E6500 work laptop, I’m so impressed by the performance and new features, a small price hike would probably not deter me from upgrading.

Thanks for the comments everyone and for sharing your opinions. It is appreciated.

I think it’s sad that Microsoft is really taking advantage of all the positive feedback the beta and RC users have given them for them to go with a pricing strategy like this.

Like it was mentioned, the economy’s in the floor - what right you have to just up the prices and make it more expensive than Vista? I believe a good pricing structure would range at about 10 or 20% off the Vista price model - it’ll pay off in the long run and give Microsoft some profit.

Microsoft needs to make it simpler. 7 Home for $100, 7 Family (3 computers) $200, 7 Business $150. They made huge inroads over Netware when NT 3.51 was so much cheaper per seat and it consolidated administration. Now they seem to depend on high prices for the balance sheet but instant on Nettops booting “instantly” into Linux from the BIOS could gut the low end profit stream.

There is going to be enough of a mess with 32 bit and 64 bit Atom, Virtual Memory crippled Non-Hyperthreading Core 2 Duo, Core i3, i5, i7, etc.

I’m concerned over feature and resource bloat. An 8x faster computer should run 8x faster not 2x faster because of extra bells and whistles.

More security and stability is good.

Email, YouTube, Web design, I’ll still be doing the same thing on my December 2009 computer as on my March 2004 XP computer.

I just want it to run faster…

What I think might happen, and what the PC retail industry is afraid of, is that higher pricing will convince people to hold off on buying Windows 7, or a new computer with Windows 7, until after the Holiday season is over. Many will wait until the SP1 release, at the least.

Resentment towards Microsoft coupled with the lagging economy could very well trim down the number of early adopters.

Well, I like win7 RC1, but I think now that both OS X and Windows can both run on the same exact Intel hardware the justice department should stop microsofts monopoly and allow you to chose which OS you will buy for an upgrade, then Apple could make much more money selling OS X versions to those using XP still and make much more than they ever would selling hardware alone! Come on already were is the competitive spirit? Better product lower cost wins the day and make more profit, as long as Microsoft has a monopoly and locked up piracy problems they can charge whatever they please now for their OS, No?

They should do very cheap upgrades for vista as win 7 is actually vista reincarnated to a better life. The idea of family licensing would be insane to ignore and it should be available to download all over the world even cheaper.

hi, let me put it like this the worlds worst product is windows OS be its XP, vista or even unreleased windows 7 it crashes and hangs more than it ever does a productive work. I believe that windows OS has killed more people of heart attack, deppression , BP and strokes due these problems than road accidents or anyother thing. is there anyone who is noticing this??? I think the basic foundation of this technology itself is wrong. we need a product maybe which has 100 times less features but 1000 times more stabile than windows, …please anyone listening??

What Do You Think?
