Coming back from the grave is Napster, a ‘Best Buy’ company according to their web site. Not only is there a paid version but Napster also is offering a free version which it claims is legal stuff available to anyone.
The new Napster states they are:
ABOUT NAPSTERNapster, the pioneer of digital music, offers the ultimate in interactive music experiences, creating better ways to discover, share, acquire and enjoy music – anytime, anywhere. The company’s offerings include “Napster” (www.napster.com) – the most popular on demand music subscription service in the world; “Freenapster” (www.freenapster.com) – a unique Web experience offering free on demand music legally; and “Napster Mobile” – one of the industry’s fastest growing mobile music platforms. Napster is headquartered in Los Angeles, with offices in New York, Luxembourg, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
But this aspect of Napster is really interesting. They state:
“SIGN UP FOR THE NAPSTER AFFILIATE NETWORK AND START EARNING MONEY NOW
Earn money by sending your visitors to Napster.
It’s easy and it’s free!
We provide banners and links for you to place on your site. When visitors from your site come to Napster.com and sign up for a Napster subscription trial, you receive a bounty. For every visitor who continues his or her subscription beyond the free trial period, you’ll receive another bounty. We supply the tools, reporting and support for you to monitor your account activity. All you have to do is host the link.
This is how it works:
1. Place banners and links on your site to send visitors to Napster.
2. We pay you a bounty for each trial subscription originating from your site.
3. For each subscription originating from your site that continues beyond the trial period, we’ll pay you another bounty.
So there you have it. The rebirth of Napster has begun. What should be interesting is how ell they will be able to compete with other companies such as Microsoft and Apple who also offer tunes on the Internet.
What do you think? Can Napster recreate itself?
Comments welcome.

Napster has been alive for quite some time and best buy has owned them for 8 months. The only news is the new pricing

That’s what I thought…
I grew bored with the whole Napster news story a year or more ago.
At that time I heard what I’d always expected:
They’d go “legit” and make someone money.

I am using it right now (literally) and I love the new system. 5 bucks a month for 5 songs, and unlimited streaming. I was on my iPhone staring at Dane Cook: Isolated Incident wishing to buy, but then went to my computer, punched it in and am listening to it for free. Gotta love it.
I will continue the 5 bucks a month deal. Its cheap, I get songs, and I get the service of pandora or slacker, no commercials, and high quality.

Hi Jeff,
Keep me updated as to how well this works for you. I would like to hear your opinion after you use the new system for awhile.
TIA, Ron
